I fixed the sms problem by adding the country code to the beginning of the numbers in my contacts. For me it was +1 since I'm in the US.

The iPhone 6 I came from would typically have 70-80% left at the end of my day. OPT has 30-40%. Hopefully it gets better with updates.
Actually, I RMA'd the device for another reason. The two that my kids have seem perfect
