A foldable from OnePlus? Reportedly, it’ll be inspired by the Find N

Howdy folks, hope everything is going well.

For starters, let's guess how many foldable phones Samsung sold in 2020. I’ll give you a moment.

The answer is a measly 500,000 units worldwide. And this included the second generation of Fold and Flip phones.

(Galaxy Fold 2 and Flip 2)

And now, guess how many units they sold during 2021. Have another moment to think.

A staggering 2,000,000 units. Yes, that’s a 300% growth year-on-year. And they don’t plan on stopping there. Samsung is predicting that, in 2022, that figure will yet again jump 4-fold to 8,000,000 units. Emphasizing again, these sales figures are only for the foldable devices offered by Samsung. For context, OnePlus sold about 10 million units in 2021. Including all of its phones. Let that sink in.

This is especially shocking because, in this poll conducted by Android Police on whether your next phone would be foldable, more than 87% of people claimed they won’t be getting a foldable device anytime soon.

But while the poll reflects a vastly negative sentiment, the sales figures say otherwise. And in my opinion, rightfully so. Samsung specifically has taken huge leaps forward with its foldable each iteration. Whether it's with the display tech, the cameras, or the UI, these devices have been getting more and more interesting with each passing generation.

And while the Fold series brings the best of the best, it suffers one fatal flaw, and that’s its price, especially in India. That being said, Samsung takes care of any folding phone enthusiast with their “budget” offering, the Flip series. Both lines of devices, however, have a long way to go. And that’s where it gets fascinating.

All of this reveals one big thing; There is a HUGE potential market for foldables. Samsung took the first-mover advantage and risk and proved it over 3 years. Now, it’s time for competition to come in and take a slice of this pie. Currently, Samsung holds 85% of the market share of foldable, but that is expected to reduce to 74% in 2022. With some approximation, that’s about 1 million units of sales up for grabs.

Enter: OnePlus. Yes, you heard it right folds, OnePlus is supposedly interested in entering the foldables space with a device “inspired” by the OPPO Find N (surprise, surprise). The latter device here wasn’t released worldwide and one can speculate that OPPO wanted to polish their device further before it got the proper spotlight of western media. Maybe through OnePlus, they might have their answer, finally, because the review units a few people could acquire seemed quite promising.

However though, this is limited to being a rumor for now, and there is no further information available about either launch or availability. We’re gonna have to wait a bit more for things to develop.

Before I go, let me ask you this question: What are your expectations, and would you consider getting a foldable device as your next smartphone?

Let us know below! Thank you for sticking around folds! Erm, folks!

It won't be "inspired" by Find N, rather it will be Find N with another name. (OnePlus Name)
And it will be mostly released by this year end.

It's not useless, foldables have different purpose. They are basically 2 in 1, table and phone. But Z Flip and Moto Razr are kinda useless as they are just normal phones with foldable screen.

it’s impressive and quite awesome how perfect it feels in hand. It was fun to play around with it at MWC in Barcelona. Compared to Samsungs Fold iteration it feels more refined and not as fragile as the Fold 3. Probably also due to its form factor.
Just a bit worried about battery life due to the smaller battery. 120hz on the inside is great but only having 60hz on the front is a bit sad. The front screen is a perfect size for me and very comfortable to use, not like the Samsung Fold. Once unfold the display shines without any (or barley even) noticeable crease, which is also impressive

How Oxygen OS compliments the hardware should be interesting to see.
I hope it has fold specific functions that enhance the user experience instead of detracting from it.
