Sound Alert slider broken - hypothetical scenario

    axbog , Nov 18, 2018 :
Let's say you put the alert slider in the vibrate or silent position. And when you want to slide it back to ring mode, you find out that it doesn't work because the mechanism is broken or the button has some sort of hardware issue that prevents it from changing the sound profile. Now you are stuck with the phone in vibrate or silent and there's no way (at least not that I've found) to raise the ring volume from Sound. The setting is grayed out and it's only adjustable if the alert slider is in Ring position. I've not found another way to override the alert slider button from the Android settings and I think it's a huge oversight.

So the question is: How to change the sound profile if the alert slider doesn't work all of a sudden?

Since nobody found a solution, I think it is fair to assume this is a potential issue. Especially with people complaining about their alert sliders being lose or wobbly. Mine is moving a bit as well.

I don't know why they didn't leave the classic option that was built into Android. The one you normally find in the drop-down quick settings. And then have the slider reset the setting when you use it. I am sure the software developers could have done this pretty easily. I'd take practicality over other gimmicks any day.

Well it's not actually a gimmick. It's a useful thing to have. But moving parts can break so it would be great to bypass the button.

No, I phrased it wrong. I don't think the alert slider is a gimmick. I wanted to say that I'd rather they had put a fail safe in the software, that would make the whole sound arrangement much more practical. Instead of having other software gimmicky things. The sound profile setting in the software seems to be a pretty easy thing to do, compared to other functions, since most of the work is already done in the AOSP version.

My OP6T has this weird issue -

The alert slider moves to the Silent position but the notification says it's on vibrate and after many attempts randomly goes to silent. Vibrate and Ring are working fine.

Sometimes when it is on the top position, it continuously vibrates for 10-15 seconds.

    TOP - Vibrate (Sometimes Silent)
    MIDDLE- Vibrate
    BOTTOM- Ring

    Any help?

    I can't say if it's a software problem or a hardware problem.

Mine got looser after some time. Hope it won't break.

Yes, I think they get looser after a while. Mine too. And I'm hardly using it. That's why this is a potential concern.

I, too, see the slider as a real potential problematic area, in a very near future. The quality of slider doesn't give much confidence about its durability. I wish OP had provided a software bypass to this slider control for volume. In fact, I would go a step further to ask OP to provide a gesture controlled (under screen-off as well as screen-on conditions) slider for volume control.

Atleast they should provide a handy widget to change the sound profiles easily and quickly without accessing the alert slider.

I shifted from OP2 to OP6t , pretty big upgrade. I have used op2 for3.5 years and found alert slider handy and sturdy.
But OP6T I find this little wobbling. I too have this concern for a failsafe

I have thought about it, but the only solutions would be to root the device and maybe then have a software bypass or after one or two years when you eventually change the battery, at the same time to change the physical alert slider.

And also when sliding the button, it's not good to push it hard. Just push it gently with your nail up and down.
