It would make development for custom ROMs easier. But yes, for OnePlus it doesn't matter as much.

I'd imagine there's some hacky way to get it working for custom ROMs right now, similar to what was released on 5/5T over on xda

My God, this completely blew me away. Thanks a ton OnePlus!
Next phone will definitely be a OnePlus 6T or 7 then.
If a phone released in November 2016 can still get Android P, then there's no point in switching to another company, when you know that your current phone is going to work great!
    Again, my sincere thanks OnePlus!

Well, you can make every ROM work without Treble. But you have trouble with all the drivers that are closed source and distributed in binary form. Those are guaranteed to work for specific Linux kernel version, though usually it should continue to work on the same branch. Though this limits the developers as they can't just use some newer kernel as drivers might break. Treble was designed as an abstraction layer, which eliminates the need to get newer binaries for newer Kernel versions. So theoretically every future kernel should work with Treble as long as the Treble format (probably some kind of ABI) isn't changed in a breaking way.
