Is it worth getting water cooling for the CPU? Is it better than a good heatsink?

I won't be doing any overclocking, but I will game, a lot. I've seen some water coolers which are not much more expensive than heatsinks.

No need for that if you'll only game and won't overclock.. It would be a waste of money for you.

Recently built my very first pc, went with a medium-priced build, based on a friend's GREAT help and several guides.

    - Intel Core i5 4670k (not overclocking)
    - MSI R9 270X
    - Asus Z87-A motherboard
    - Crucial Ballistixx Tactical 2x4 GB Ram (1600 MHz)
    - Samsung 840 EVO Basic 120 SSD
    - Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD
    - Corsair Carbide 200R case
    - Scythe Mugen 4 cooler (cheap and does the trick remarkably well - but mounting was a *****, HUGE heatsink :p)
    - CoolerMaster VS Series V550S PSU
    - Samsung SH-224DB DVD drive
    - LG IPS277L-BN monitor

Really happy with it, runs very smoothly. I'm more of a casual gamer - would rarely see me play a very new AA game - but it does run everything very nicely.

Built my PC 3-4 years ago or something, so it's not the fanciest. And even back when I built it, there was better stuff out, so yeah xD But whatever, it does the job fine, can play games at high so I'm good

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition @ 3.40 GHz
    RAM: 8GB Corsair @ 1600 MHz
    Mobo: Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H
    GPU: ASUS ENGTX460 DIRECTCU/2DI/1GD5
PSU: Corsair Builder Series CX600 V2
    Cabinet: NZXT Hades Crafted Series
Other: 1TB Western Digital HDD, random ******* DVD drive, 32 inch Samsung 1080p monitor, Razer and Logitech peripherals

Probably going to build a new one end of this year, or next year. And oh yeah, also have a laptop for school (Lenovo Yoga 13)

Good but I would of went with a 280x instead of buying an SSD. for me a better GPU is more important than an SSD for now.

You're mental. SSD's are the biggest revolution to happen to computers since Wi-Fi :p I use my pc for a lot more than just gaming, and your overall pc experience is a lot smoother and faster with an SSD, and they've become really cheap really fast. The SSD also cuts down on power (marginally) and noise (a fair amount). If I had thought I needed a better GPU, I would've bought it, but the 270X is more than fine for my needs, was a lot cheaper, can handle anything I need it for. I did compare GPUs, and since I'm not exactly rich, value was an important factor. By the time I need a more powerful GPU, I'll be able to buy one twice as powerful for half the price.
