I've never rooted before or installed a custom rom but I'm becoming very impatient waiting for lollipop to arrive so I was wondering if this was possible..?

No, no, definitely NO. CM11s and CM12 are two different branches that have incompatible data with each other. WILL NOT FULLY BOOT IF YOU DIRTY FLASH

N O if you were on another CM (not s) ROM then yes. But CM#s is a different modded version based on the Cyanogenmod branch. But modded so much because it is made to work mainly and intended to be only for the Oneplus One, that it is not compatible with the stock CM branch. If you want lollipop wait another month for CM12s

You can flash a ROM like LiquidSmooth and keep photos and other stuff, but you will have to lose your Data partition (basically your apps and app data, NOT pictures, etc). Really just depends on what you mean by you don't want to lose your "data" or what you're willing to reinstall.

Ah, jeez, I completely brushed that over! Damn, I sometimes forget that, as I'm used to getting a phone, making sure everything works on it, and if it works, unlocking it right after that point. But that is a tough choice then, I'm less caring of my application data as most of it saves in the cloud, and I run backups on my PC whenever I do some ghetto experimentation on my phone, so I don't worry about it as much as others do!

To root, you need to unlock the bootloader which will wipe off your phone + data. Technically, no.

I backed u all my apps and their data with titanium backup (not system apps and data). Then I flashed CM 12 and restore my apps. Everything was working great. System apps and data like contacts are backup to the cloud. So once I login in my google account, everything was restored.
But since your phone is not rooted, you wont be able to us titanium backup. Rooting your phone the "usual" way means that you will have to unlock the bootloader and therefore you will lose all you data.
There are guides on this forum on how to root you opo without loosing your data. I have not tried any of them but just search the forum. Have a look at this thread https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/...ck-the-bootloader-without-losing-data.103642/

Backup everything to Google. Flash new ROM. Sync everything back from google. Done. Then once you are done installing your new ROM and restoring do a full titanium backup and back the TB file up to google. When it comes to the final CM12 for the one, clean install , download the tb file and restore it, all data and apps restored.
Only things you will likely lose will be media. So make sure it's backed up well.

I don't worry neither. Either I use tb to backup apps or I just redo my setup. Sometimes it's almost fun :)

Its 100% possible once you have the initial cm12 ROM loaded and put everything back on your phone then use the CyanDelta app to update every nightly. If you haven't tooted or are switching from another ROM then you will NEED to backup all your files before you flash CM12

a month for the first release if we are lucky, and another 6 months to have an almost stable ROM. That phone is one big mistake.
