    Mr. BG , Sep 4, 2016 :
Something not working? System freezing, apps crashing, phone heating up?

Here are some basic troubleshooting tips for those not very tech savvy (yet) ;)

Please try this before making yet another thread (and save yourself from being yelled at and picked on for the rest of your life in this community) If you still have problems just reply in this thread, we'll be happy to help :)

Now, here is step one: turn it off, wait for a minute and turn it on again.

    Really?

Yes, really, a lot of problems can be solved by switching your phone off once in a while, it clears your phones memory from unwanted errors/corrupted data.

    So, always do this first!

That didn't work Mr. Smartypants, now what?

That depends on your problem really, if it is just one app using a lot of battery (and heating up your device) or behaving bad otherwise you may try this:
    • Go to system settings -> Apps
    • Choose the app giving you problems
    • Clear the app cache and data.
If this still doesn't work you may uninstall the app, reinstall it after a restart of your phone, you may also try to clear system cache as described below ⬇️

Freezing, lagging, heating? Then the first thing you should do is:

    Clear your system cache.

Always do this before running OTA updates or flashing a beta or whatever!

If your phone is freezing, lagging, heating or otherwise behaving erratic chances are your system cache got corrupted. This often happens with lousy programmed apps (Facebook!) and/or after system updates.

There are several ways to clear system cache, this is the best one:
    • Shut down your phone
    • Press power and volume down simultaneously
    • Choose your preferred language
    • Choose "Wipe data and cache, BE CAREFUL NOW!
    • Choose "Wipe cache", DO NOT CLEAR DATA!
    • Choose yes on continuing.
    • Reboot your phone.
If nothing else is not working the only solution may be too perform a factory reset.

This will bring your phone back to the state it left the factory.

    Factory reset

Always backup all your Stuff before doing this!
    • Shut down your phone
    • Press power and volume down simultaneously
    • Choose your preferred language
    • Choose "Wipe data and cache, BE CAREFUL NOW!
    • Choose Factory reset -> did you really backup everything?
    • Last chance... No turning back here...
    • "Data and cache will be wiped, continue?"
    • Choose "Yes" (backed up data, you're sure?)
    • Reboot after
    • Start setting up your phone again.

    Wifi not working
    • Try switching off the router and your phone.
    • Restart router, after it is done start your phone
    • Wipe your network settings on your phone.
    • Do you have a battery saving App? It may kill your wifi...
    • The WiFi Fixer App may come in handy
    Problems charging*
    • Make sure the charging block and cables are properly and completely inserted.
    • You may try a different cable if you have one
    • Phone won't turn on after being fully discharged: can normally be resolved by ensuring you are using an official charger and official cable and leaving it for 10 minutes

    Thanks Andy, @Tokolozi @jpswer

TL;DR: just go away, get a new phone on renewal of your contract, make sure it's an iPhone :p

Thanks @Mr. BG !! Really helpful to everyone since many update are on their way for all the three devices on oxygen OS since problems usually start after updates :)

Phone won't turn on after being fully discharged can normally be resolved by ensuring you are using an official charger a d official cable and leaving it for 10 minutes (less of an issue I'd guess with Dash charging)

Personally, I see these steps too basic and I could do these and much more complicated ones even when I'm sleeping :/

You should wipe cache before + after OTA updates.

Personally I think that this thread is aimed at those folk who don't have a full grasp of Android yet and will be useful for them. Many threads are asking for help on such topics. Congratulations on your ability to perform even more complicated steps in your sleep. You've shown us all you're the man.:)

Nice job @Mr. BG, as usual ! Good check-list.
I would have said 'RTFM !' (Read the Effing Manual '), but it' s inappropriate in this case :p

@Mr. BG with charging I would highly reccomend trying a different cable as well 99% of the time its the cable and not the phone.

Also if the phone is draining exsessivly and getting hot. Check what app is using the most battery, it's going to be the cause of it. Had a runaway messenger app once cause extremely rapid draining without it even being open and force closed.

Hey there! Some of these instructions were not helpful. For example, the holding the volume down and power button simultaneously only takes a screenshot. Also, I followed the instructions to clear the cache of an app that is giving me problems but there was no menu for doing this.

    You're welcome...

You have to hold power and volume button while the phone is switched off, as it clearly states.

What app are you talking about? What OS are you on?

And just in case you missed that, I'm just a member making an effort to help others out, just stating "it isn't helpful" is not very encouraging for me to help in the future, unless you pay me, ok?

Thank you for pointing out any errors.

    Have a nice day too.

Ah yes, it does say that clearly. I was scanning too quickly and missed it. Sorry.

I have a OP3 that I got two weeks ago, I'm assuming I'm using the most up to date version of Oxygen (3.2.4). I'm moving from iPhone so I feel a bit stunted at the moment. There is a lot more to know about Android by virtue of the fact that you are allowed to go deeper.

My messenger app crashes every time i try create a new message. I have to go into my contacts app to start a message from there. I can continue previous conversations from the messaging apps. i just can't start a new conversation from the app. It's not debilitating but it's annoying.

Thank you for making an effort to help others out. I had a frustration melt down this morning with this phone which resulted in my terse wording. I haven't been able to find clear answers to my problems anywhere and I just want some ELI5 explanations.
