    Baymax , Mar 9, 2018 :
So, I know when people read that title, they are thinking about 1 thing...

WATERCOLOR/OIL PAINTING EFFECT ON THE CAMERA!

    And you'd be right...

so I have a few theories.

    Theory 1:
So, what if I told you the problem wasn't with the camera on the 5 or 5T.

I hinted at this the other day with full detail in The Wormhole buuut to recap... it isn't your fault but rather the compression of the photo through Google Photos. If it is compressed well, then there will be no loss of quality. Therefore no watercolor/oil painting effect. [IMG]

    Theory 2:
Only shown while zoomed way in.

    Theory 3:
Only on the phone screen. When on separate platform, like a desktop, the effect disappears.

    Theory 4:
HDR. When you use HDR, the picture gets the effect.

    Theory 5:
Beauty mode on rear camera. Having rear camera beauty mode on causes the effect.

    Theory 6 (confirmed) :
Simply just the processing of the photo through the device.

    Theory 7:
There is too much movement/motion when taking the photo

    Confirmed theory info:
OnePlus intentionally has the oil painting effect in post-processing to smoothen out features in the photo for less noise.

Let's get to the bottom of this issue.

I agree. I've seen photos taken on the S9(In recent reviews), Pixel 2, iPhone X uploaded which also had this effect. It is definitely just the over compression.

Yep I saw you mention this is the Wormhole and thought it was an important discovery.
We need to tell the world! I'll happily post a link to this thread every time I see another 'oil paint effect' post but any chance you could post a couple of pics to show the difference please?

They both mean the same. "Compressing well" means not OVER or UNDER, just right.

nope. I meant what I said. talking about the after product.

If you use a good compression software (I use Image Editor) then it will compress it better without a loss of quality like in the picture of the "puppy" i posted. [IMG]

Is the oil painting effect not visible when the local file is viewed using gallery app?

With so many people complaining about it, I would be surprised if the oil painting effect was only visible on the Google Photos app. Even more surprised because it took this long to figure that out.

I know it may be a hassle but WoHo is huge and some may have trouble finding the relevant posts.
A couple of pics here could kill the 'issue' dead and I would happily redirect every 'oil paint effect' post I see here.

if this was a google photo problem, oneplus would have just came out with a statement blaming google and saying something "use our app instead"... but they didnt because their app has same issues...
