Earlier this month, in a bid to find out what makes a perfect smartphone camera, we decided to carry out a blind test. What’s a blind test? We chose four categories (Architecture, Low Light, Portrait Lowlight and Portrait) and the top four flagship smartphones of 2018 (iPhone X, Galaxy S9, Pixel 2 and the OnePlus 6) and tested all four under each category.

We then asked users to give their unbiased vote for each category and we collated the results to find out which flagship performed the best under each condition.

Each of these smartphones was tested under similar conditions in a performance test to gain an understanding of how all these flagships line up against each other. Every photo was shot in full Auto mode with all settings set to their out-of-the-box state, including automatic HDR and exposure. Each of these flagship devices is technically capable of capturing photos in manual/pro mode, which offer the feature set of a DSLR camera. While this feature does offer more flexibility, most users typically shoot using auto mode, so instead, we’re testing the full automatic experience that each of these OEMs has worked so hard to provide.

We randomized the images taken by these devices and asked people to vote for what looked best.

OnePlus 6 got the most votes across all categories and was voted the best in Portrait Low-Light photography!

    Category 1 – Portrait Low-Light Image

    Winner -
    OnePlus 6 | Runner-Up - Google Pixel 2

We’ve all had that moment out in the night sky taking pictures of friends and family or taking that all-important night-out selfie. So it was a no-brainer that low-light portraits had to be tested out as an essential camera feature.

The OnePlus 6 was voted as the best camera in this category. More than 2 in 5 voters chose the OnePlus 6 image as the best Portrait Low-Light image. The Smart Capture software on the new OnePlus 6 improves the clarity of your photos quietly in the background. Depending on the environment and time of day, Smart Capture will select which feature to use to optimize your photo for maximum clarity. With Advanced HDR, which is an improved High Dynamic Range algorithm, the OnePlus 6 brings out shadows and enhances lighting in your photos.

    Category 2 – Architecture Image

    Winner -
    iPhone X | Runner-Up - OnePlus 6

    2.png

One of the most common photos taken by everyday users is that of architectural structures and establishments. When we presented it to users, nearly 1 in 4 users chose the output from the new OnePlus 6, ahead of the Pixel 2 and Galaxy S9!

    Category 3 – Low Light

    Winner -
    Google Pixel 2 | Runner-Up - OnePlus 6

The third category for the test was Low Light image performance for each flagship. Users across the board told us how important it was for a high-end device to be able to take low-light images. Not always does one find suitable lighting conditions to compose a shot. Hence, we went out in the night and took shots of a building moderately lit without any backlight to support the shot.

1 in 3 voters chose the OnePlus 6 image as the best low-light shot, ahead of iPhone X and Galaxy S9. The OnePlus 6’s dual camera system features a 16MP main camera, supported by a 20MP secondary camera. With an f/1.7 aperture, the 16MP main camera has been bolstered by a 19% larger sensor and OIS for outstanding performance in a range of conditions, especially low-light situations.

    Category 4 – Portrait Mode

    Winner -
    Galaxy S9 | Runner-Up - Google Pixel 2

The final category for this camera shootout was normal portrait photos. Portrait mode images are the most commonly shot scenes. Be it pictures of your dog or your annoying best friend, portrait mode is used to capture those special moments and expressions.

1 in 4 users chose the OnePlus 6 for portrait mode images. The OnePlus 6’s front camera and rear dual-camera setup, uses a new AI algorithm, which will be able to apply a depth of field effect to your selfies or portrait shots. Newly added bokeh effects, including circles, hearts and stars will offer ways for you to customize your portraits to fit your style!

    Verdict

With the new OnePlus 6, we’ve bumped our camera performance up several notches. We learned from our community about what’s important when composing a shot and that not every time does one have the opportunity to set up a DSLR like output using manual mode. We took all those learnings and baked them into the camera configuration of the new OnePlus 6 and the results are clear! Let us know what you thought of this test? As always, our community is our biggest R&D source and we’re constantly striving to make better phones with every release.

Let us know what you thought of this blind test!

Nice ... looks like OnePlus is coming close to flagships not just in price but camera performance as well :D
Just wondering how is the 20MP secondary camera supporting the primary 16MP camera in different lighting conditions ?
Definitely would like a thread on that from the OnePlus Camera team ! @Carl

Why can't we view full-size images? Not much of anything to go off of if you just have garbage thumbnails.
