I'm confused of the use for the monochrome lens. Is it there to assist in low-light? Depth-sensing or what?

The monochrome sensor is basically your non software Black and White filter for your camera.
If you take BW pics in Automode, this sensor will get the "color" data for your picture. Pic will still be 12 MP, but with exceptional BW values.

If it is used in HDR or general Photos to improve depth I cannot tell.

Is it different from the photochrome filter implemented in 8 Pro?

Yeah, the monochrome is only for white and black while *I think* the photochrome just dulled the colours/showed some colours

But if you cover the Main lense while in the B/W mode, it just saves a black image and when you cover the B/W camera it just says dont cover the B/W camera. And if you hold your finger in front of the B/W camera so that it does not detect that der lense is covered, it also just saves a B/W image created from the main camera where you can't see ANY difference between the image with not covered lenses....

So is the sensor even used for B/W images?

When I am in BW mode and cover the BW sensor I get an error message that tells me not to cover that lense.
    As intended.

Try to just hold your finger just in front of the B/W camera.
But the problem is not that it does not detect that... The problem is that it seems that it doesn't use the B/W camera in the final image at all :D

It does for me. When I cover the BW lense only, I get an error message.

Beware only the last filter is Hardware BW. The others are using Software and it's only available in 12 mp mode.

Here I am still in BW mode but the screen turn back to color because the lense is covered.

it's a little sensor, so the software use this only when there is a lot of light. So try to use the BnW mode when you are outside with a lot of light, and cover it with a finger. Surely it will give you an errore message.
