Considering OP refresh their flagship every 6 months, I would always advise waiting for the release of the newest device, if you've decided on OP as your next phone.
Crucially, once you've got your hands on it, remember that there will be a refreshed device announced 5 months later, that it will not make your new device any less capable, and that you should be both expectant and happy about this.

My serious wish is that they DO go with the notch design (which at this stage seems 99% likely) as it's the most practical way to implement the tech but that they do the notch CORRECTLY.
What I mean by this, and it's just my opinion, is they black-out the status bar completely, permanently. That way it's not a notch, it's pushing the status bar items up into the top bezel, freeing up the screen below making a beautifully clean design and maximising the screen space. So it would look like a Samsung S9 at the top of the phone, lovely clean design with no visible notch, but with status bar items above the screen, not on it.

    That would be bloody lovely.

I suspect (just my guess) that the hatred towards the notch has more to do with android guys and girls spending the past 6 months mocking the iPhone X, specifically because it's the iPhone, and not because it's a poor design choice.
It appears notch implementation will be widespread in 2018, and once we're all used to seeing it on androids as well, we'll mostly all come round to the idea. As a tech solution, it's great. I just wish the sides of the notch were permanently blacked out so it's a virtual top bezel with status bar items with a cleaner design, but that's just me.

It's helpful to remember that the Android Essential Ph-1 was the first phone announced with a notch, not the Apple device. So you can think of it as tech 'copied' from android to iPhone, not the other way around, if it helps you!

The thing is, when it actually launches and has the presumed notch, it will sell like hot cakes. For every 1 person that says 'no, never' there are 100 who would say 'yes please, take my cash'.

It's also a key part of how they are able to make flagship phones for 30% less $ than other flagship manufacturers. They use the best bits available at bulk prices from their sister company, then add their own flavour and high end chips.

I agree @f1982 . The notch would look good if they implement it the way you suggest. And if they added some quick shortcuts to the notch status bar area while watching video that hides when not required. It would be non obtrusive that way while watching videos in 18:9 too.(according to some leaks, oppo R15 is doing that.)

And, also if they removed the chin.

If one plus comes with a notch, and then they realize it was a mistake, I would wait for oneplus 7.

Android has done a superb job with the notification drawer. Adding a notch over it will simply ruin the years of hardwork and innovation. Imagine the current notification functionality with a notch. Who would want it?

I don't see how it could be a mistake. Samsung appears to be the only major player not releasing notch phones this year. But more specifically, how could a notch cause any headaches that could constitute a mistake? It's not like a major design decision to only include a 1500mAh battery to make a super slim phone, for example. It's just a design choice. Doesn't really impact the use of the phone.
When you say notification drawer, do you mean status bar, i'm confused? Because again, I don't see how this would in anyway affect the notification drawer? It's not connected to the status bar, which is the only thing affected by the notch.

Yeah, everyone is focused on the notch. Hardly anyone looking at the chin which for me is equally as important (or equally unimportant if you're so inclined) as a design element.

My personal preference would be for a super slim chin that incorporates back/home/fingerprint/multi buttons, (same as OP5 but much slimmer). But if those buttons aren't there, having a big, dumb, blank chin offends me from a design perspective. That's one thing the iPX undeniably did get right - no buttons at the bottom and an almost nonexistent chin.

There's more chance of them making a phone carved out of actual sandstone than that.

OnePlus phones have never been for the average consumer. My friends and family have only heard of this company because I'll mention them offhand now and again. If OnePlus targets the average consumer and lets go of the power users and enthusiasts in the process, they'll flop. Average consumers won't buy it because they've never heard of OnePlus, and enthusiasts won't buy it because it won't appeal to them.

It appears to me at least that OnePlus is listening to their core fans more than ever at present. At the same time however, they have to make the phone the most number of people will buy (that includes their core 'fans') and not just make the phone the likes of people on this forum demand. We've pretty much all seen the Simpsons episode where Homer designs a car to meet every whim of a consumer, and it's a compromised mess.
OnePlus's core users want to see OP pushing the design, putting in the best chips, but keeping the price 30% less than other recognised flagships. They'll continue to do that, and a full screen with a notch is part of that, too.

Pls tell me the next OnePlus device won't have a notch...just because Apple does it doesn't mean everyone has to.
