I am confused. Why and how would changing your MAC address allow you to do this?

    Good question.

He might want to do something illegal and immediately want to change the mac ID. so that he won't be caught by the mac ID tracking

That doesn't make you safe on the internet. ;)

You actually can't change the MAC address of a device (it's on the NIC) but what you can do is 'spoof' the mac address by using a piece of software (see the link in the second post). There probably is something for android devices but I don't specifically know of any.

To surf safe you can use incognito browser, right?

    But only to surf!!

I am aware of spoofing - have used it before to trick my old Virgin Media cable modem into letting me use my own router...and for getting around device restrictions on hotel wifi. :)

The local network will still see your device, and then you have a whole other level of logging and tracing and so on.....it goes on and on, and unless you really are doing something really bad (or daft) then why worry.

Also, if you ARE doing something totally illegal and don't know how to protect yourself (and have to resort to asking in a forum about it) you really are daft and it's kind of bad man natural selection at work when you do get caught.

Use a VPN so nobody can read and spoof your traffic. That is way more secure than changing the MAC address.

Doesn't matter why he wants to do it.
Anyway, you shouldn't be able to permanently change it, bit there are people reporting they get a different one when they use a different ROM. You can temporarily spoof it though, on a normal device that is. I haven't found a way to do it on the opo. Every app which is supposed to change the mac fails on my opo. And I get errors when trying busybox in a terminal.

If you think that incognito browsing automatically makes you "safe", then you're mistaken.

Miraries, It does matter to me. Not from a legal point of view, or even to get a cheap joke. Out of technical curiosity.

What I said was just to surf.
BTW, can you please share how to be really safe, or not tracked apart from incognito browsing?

I don't know why he may want to do it.. But let's say you're in a hotel which only gives you half an hour of internet per day. So when you spoof you id they just think you're a new user and you get another half an hour... Just an example..
