Deep Dive: What makes a Snowbot tick

    Hey everyone,

During the teasing that led to our Snowbots campaign, the guesses covered all areas, from smartwatches to entirely new industries, and everything in-between. With the Snowbots catching everyone by surprise, many among you wanted to know more about our snowy robot overlords. Wait no further! We’re sharing all the deets.

    Stronger than your average human
Our four Snowbots are built to withstand the elements and over 72 hours of non-stop snow fights. For the shielding, we used the same 6000-series aluminum employed in some of our devices and the aviation industry. To build them, over 80 custom-made parts were used. Even with the lightweight alloy, this amounts to over 100kg per Snowbot.

Powering them, 3000W worth of power is distributed across four 750W brushless servo motors, each one of them responsible for a specific movement: lateral, rotation, vertical and one dedicated to the 9-snowball revolver.

    Dressed to impress
Without giving too much away, we reached out to some community members, shared different designs and asked for their feedback. Over several rounds of designs, we took inspiration that led us to our final design. The result? A killer design, pun intended.

    Brains over brawn
The Snowbots aren’t just built for power or looks, though. A OnePlus 5Gdevice is both the brain and the eyes of each bot. The camera allows you to see your target and aim with an accuracy under 1 mm, while the blazing-fast 5G modem achieves the network speed and latency needed to provide you the best gaming experience thousands of kms away from Ruka, Finland.

If our phone is the brain, the ESP32 microcontroller is the nervous system, connecting not just the brushless motors, but also reporting information from the three hit sensors (2 in the body, 1 in the head) that will detect each snowball that finds its target. connects to a router and/or 5G, he doesn't know.

    Float like a butterfly…
Don’t be put off by the Snowbots’ weight. The bots gracefully slide laterally in the arena, over 2.5 meters of rails. We’ve tweaked the acceleration and overall speed to provide the best experience when dodging those incoming snowballs, while keeping the of power provided by the dedicated brushless motor in check. This means that each Snowbot will be able to move at a speed of 1 m/s.

    …sting like a bee
And what a sting does this bee have. The barrel, 50 mm in diameter, can shoot anything that fits its 46 mm inner diameter, but we’ll stick to snowballs. Powered by 8 to 10 bars of compressed air, it can shoot up to 200 meters, with snowballs being able to reach 120 mph, almost 200 km/h.

A 1-liter tank of air is fully used at each shot, being refilled in a heartbeat, for a speed of up to 2 balls per second. This means you can unload a full 9-snowball revolver under 5 seconds.

    But still human-friendly
All these specs might be scared, but never fear, @dsmonteiro is here. Before any human enters the arena (which is netted all-around), the Snowbots are adjusted to even the playfield. I will be the guinea-pig-in-chief, testing the snowball output from each bot.
