Define "overheating". Is it shutting itself down in safe mode or is the device just warm?

    Also: What apps?

Overheating is when device turn itself off because it's overheating... Guess that's not the case with yours, how hot does it actually get?

Warm is not overheating. Mobile phones get warm when heavy apps are being used (like Netflix in combination with GPS from Uber & Instagram). They also have a safeguard installed, if the phone get's to warm: it will give you a message about it.

40°C isn't that bad if in heavy use... But it should definitely not heat up by itself in your pocket, there might be some app that using SoC hard even when device is locked with screen off...

I do have some overheating as well.
when the top of the phone is really hot. and if it's not because of direct sunlight. it means something is wrong in it.

can be a bad codded app or any soft issue build in the os...
but guess what since 6t arrived OnePlus 6 has been left behind so don't expect too much in term of improvement

Any electronic device produces heat when working.
This heat must be evacuated. According to environnement, this dissipation may be harder (hot temperature outside, warm object/body close by, case...) and phone will get hotter than usual. Your device may also get hotter according to network reception.
If you combine bad network reception, phone working in background, and device in a case close to your body in summer, no surprise it's getting hot!!!

Any further guess about company policy is just useless bad guessing in this case.
