Cyanogenmod is based off android. Android is the base/source code that cyanogen added features + modified to make it more unique

Cyanogenmod is android. It is a modified version of Android that is more customizable, and with a few tweaks over the "stock version" but there are other versions out there

Stock Android + Goodies/Bacon = Cyanogenmod. Hope that helps.

In all seriousness, Cyanogenmod gives you the option to customize w/out sacrificing anything from the OS.

So do these "tweaks" affect the performance of the phone? In other words, does Cyanogenmod make the phone perform worse than it would with stock Android? Sorry, I'm new to all of this

I find I'm more and more repulsed by anything with a white background, including this site. I don't understand why Google doesn't build a dark UI option into their core apps. Maybe with Lollipop but I'm not hopeful.

I think it performs better but your mileage may vary and this is highly dependent on hardware

Yes, it does affect the performance. In a positive way. I took out my Nexus 5 the other day and I could've sworn the OPO ran smoother...
