I think there's also the fact that with hardware essentially the same for everyone of them, we're basically buying based on Software. So they'll have to fight us on it. That's why OnePlus always boasts about OOS.

Someone else knows about GSIs, I am so glad to know that. I really cannot wait for GSIs, they'll actually be revolutionary in terms of standardising the device. Also, I completely agree with the "and why do I need to root?" argument. There's barely anything worth using anymore on Magisk. I still like being able to update Android, it lets me reuse old devices for new things.

Well, yeah. Still, I often really appreciate it - DU was one of the first customer ROMs I ever installed :(

Oh those days were so exciting to try a new rom every other day and customise like no one around has even known. Dirty unicorn was great ROM, their customisations were excellent and wonderful. I liked pulse a lot and it's wave type movement according to the music was great.
Cheers to all the great features and flashing fun✌️

Having belonged to the AOKP team of the developer LorD ClockaN for the Nexus 7 tablets (Deb, Razor and Flo) as well as to a former team specialized in HTC (CoreDroid) dissolved for some time now, I think that custom roms must continue because they allow to prolong the life of some old androphones which would otherwise end up in the trash.

Then it's a pity that AOKP stops, maybe another dev will take over to give life again, but developing, maintaining a rom with a team is a lot of time spent testing the rom before releasing it, as @dsmonteiro writes.

Moreover, most rom development teams have to buy their smartphones in order to do the testing and they are not paid for their work.

And unfortunately after a while, life changes and you have other projects. I stopped all rom maintenance since 2014.
So I understand very well that the development teams stop their work, unpaid, if there is no succession

As sad to see a great development team go, I agree with several posts here that the need to root and ROM is much less a necessity now. I've owned my 7 Pro almost a year now and it's still on full stock unrooted. The stock Oxygen OS has pretty much everything I used to have to root to get and I just don't see any need to go through the process.
