Do you remember the days when downloading a 5MB song took more than half an hour? Or when the peak Internet speed reached a mere 256Kbps? Being a kid from the 90s, I have witnessed the Internet evolution almost from scratch.

In 2005, we were connected to the Internet for the first time via Tata Indicom's Walky. With a maximum speed of 50Kbps, it was primarily used by my dad for his office work. After four years, we upgraded the Internet speed to 153Kbps using Tata Photon Plus, a famous wireless dongle in India.

Back then, my only requirement was Wikipedia articles for school projects. In 2011, the network architecture in my area was upgraded and the dongle started providing speeds of up to 3Mbps. I remember jumping in excitement when a simple Google search took less than one minute to load :p.

However, the major issue with wireless dongles was the unstable Internet connection speeds. During the same time, mobile Internet in India was witnessing an upgrade from 2G to 3G. By 2012, Airtel (a major carrier in India) started the rollout of 3G services in my locality. Since my dad had a postpaid plan, I decided to use his Internet and download a few games on my phone. Little did I know, a 150MB game would cost him more than ₹5000 (around 58€ or $63). The day he got his bill, he was furious and tried to raise a dispute for the abnormal charges, but I was the main culprit

With the Internet becoming a part of our lives, my parents allowed me to set up a Wi-Fi connection in 2015. The first plan was 2Mbps speed with no limitation on data usage and unlimited downloads paved a new way of using the Internet. I was satisfied with the speed until the inception of 4G in 2017. This is an old screenshot that shows the speed of Wi-Fi compared to the LTE connection.

2016 - 2017 can be considered as an Internet revolution in India. Free 4G Internet forced every company to drop their pricing and our local Internet provider decided to upgrade the speed to 8Mbps. After two years, the speed was further upgraded to 15Mbps for the same pricing. In 2021, with the help of fiber optics, our Internet provider started supporting a peak Internet speed of up to 1Gbps. However, such speeds are priced way beyond my expectations and I ended up choosing a 60Mbps unlimited plan. Too many numbers, right?

Started using the internet with 50Kbps speed and the current speed is 60Mbps

Recently, I saw a user getting over 2000 Mbps Internet speed using mmWave 5G network. A lot of my friends in this community had previously shared their Internet speeds in the following threads: here and here, for example.

With super-fast 5G networks and Giga Fiber connections, I wonder what your current speed is. Flex your Internet speed in the comments and share your Internet evolution story. Cannot wait to get jealous of what you're getting. 😝

    I will start with mine:

    That one was on WiFi.
The mobile networks speeds are hovering around 15 mbps download and 5 mbps upload, but the network is unreliable with frequent drop in speeds.

My internet revolution story goes like this, I used to have a custom PC and got a 1Mbps Up-Down Internet Cable Connection with it, it was decent back then, but now it seems how was it decent! It was superrrr slowww.

Anyways, so then I went on to upgrade directly to 1Gbps Fiber Net connection on the next upgrade almost after 3-4 yrs of that decent connection.

I also explored 300Mbps plans with fiber, but finally settled for 50Mbps upload-download speed plans. It gets the work done with ''decent" speeds, even while using 3-4 devices simultaneously.

I am waiting for the next big revolution which will make this current decent slowww again✨🚀

Seems like my area has network booster enabled, no? Since last month speeds of VI has doubled. May be check if your area has one booster available?
