Mine does that, as did my 6T. Freeze, quick power off/on and it's unfrozen. Sometimes if you let it set for a few seconds it unfreezes. I've read somewhere it is happening on other brand phones so it is either a google or android issue.

I never had a single freeze on Samsung s8+ in Chrome. But the OnePlus seems to freeze every hour or so. Not saying it's a OnePlus only issue buts it's frequent since I made the switch. It actually just happened writing this message, I took a screenshot and that fixed it, so I think the issue isn't that it's freezing rather that it stops rendering the app instead. (Attached screenshot shoes me writing hello, yet the screen hasn't updated but the keyboard has)

If I open incognito and close the last tab or use close all it seems to freeze although only for about 10 seconds.

If you sign up an account with rockstar and try typing up a support ticket it seems to freeze almost every minute .

You're talking about a different issue. The freezing which people are experiencing here has different workarounds, such as tapping on recent tabs or by going to the home screen and going back to Chrome. The freezing also occurs during typing, the typing is still being registered but just not shown. When you apply any of the two previously mentioned workarounds, then the typed text will be visible.

This is not exclusive to OnePlus, but happens with other smartphone manufacturers as well. It even happens with Google Pixels. It seems to be caused by the combination of Android 10 and Chrome.

This only happens with a combination of Android 10 and Chrome.

Is this a phone issue or Google issue. Regardless i have the same issue. Not all the time, but a few times a week

Same problem with my brand new OnePlus 8 PRO 12/256 updated to the last Oxygen OS 10.5.12 IN11AA

Cleaning cache/cookies and updating Google Chrome to the latest version available on the Play Store does not fix anything.
Incredible it is not even possible to uninstall it to try to reinstall the latest version.
While writing this message, it froze again 2 times. One browser window only opened.
Cache/cookies cleaned, the Google Chrome app closed and reopened afterwards.

Very disappointed along with the fact this phone costs more than € 1000 and does have a led around the selfie camera that can not be used as notification led when you receive SMS, WhatsApp, charging the phone, etc. that could be enabled by OnePlus simple adding this software functionality even entry level phones have.
This is causing me a lot of missed/unread WhatsApp messages, SMS, etc. with people complaining to me since I always have to turn on the display to see if I missed something and understand if the phone is fully charged...

I'm facing exactly the same issue on my OP6 as described in the thread. There's no issue on my Xiaomi Note 10 with Chrome so I'm blaming OnePlus for the issue. Recently I've disabled RAM boost and I'm facing much less issues in Chrome random freezes than with this feature enabled. I didn't notice any significant decrease in phone performance nor in the behavior of other apps.

Disabling power saving for Android System Webview seems fixed the issue for me.

Settings -> search webview -> select android system webview -> battery optimization -> don't optimize

    Edit: I have OP8

I tried several things all at once on my OP8 so maybe I'm not sure exactly what the fix is:
    • Disabling power saving for Webview as mentioned by Bogeyd above
    • Using Webview Canary
    • Upgrading to Android 11 beta
    • Setting chrome://flags/#ignore-gpu-blacklist to enabled in my browser

The freezing issue is completely gone for me now!

The thing that I believe seemed to do the trick was upgrading to Android 11 Beta, I'm sure that everything else I tried had no effect on Android 10. Still, to be on the safe side I still enable the other settings as well. I have no clue if disabling them will cause the freezing to come back, and I certainly won't bother trying, unless Webview Canary turns out to be buggy enough in which case I'll step down to Dev or Beta (It's fine for now).

This still happens randomly, so this workaround didn't fix it. Also disabling RAM boost didn't fix it. I'll try to clear webview storage now, hopefully it won't break anything.

Guys I've tried everything mentioned here and I still get random 5 second freezes using Chrome or Chrome beta. Samsung Internet browser is much more stable for me and it too has the 5 second freezes but rarely (2-4 times a day using Chrome versus 1-2 times a week on Samsung Internet browser). The only thing I haven't tried is updating to Android 11 beta 2, but I don't want to wipe everything to switch back to the stable builds. I don't know why it's taking so long to fix Chrome but it's definitely been going on for a very long time.

I've discovered that sometimes if you hold your finger down when it freezes it will unfreeze. Leads me to believe that it has NOTHING to do with a browser and possibly more about spyware One+ has put on the phone. 🤔
