    every 5-6 minutes, my phone will display full screen ads even if I have no apps open. is this part of the update?

    No its not due to the update, its due to you visiting dodgy websites and or installing dodgy apps which is the most likely...
    Stop looking for others to blame for your own mistakes..

    All I know is that it wasn't doing that before it downloaded the update. Also, I have a whole other phone for that "dodgy" stuff.

    That's the problem it's NOT down to the update or everyone would have it, think it about for more than a second...
    If I was you I would remove recently added apps, if that don't work its factory reset time..
