I am facing the same problem at least with Gmail.
    I didn't check with whatsapp.

I am not sure if it is a problem with oneplus or with the Gmail app.

I tried all the obvious things like clearing cache and data of Gmail and play services.

    No solution found so far.

The problem started with OS 5.0.1

Gmail is not listed among the apps that can be unoptimized.
This was of course the first thing I checked

No news on this issue ?
Gmail is not updating since the 5.0.1 update.
I checked that also whatsapp does not update in background (I don't use it very often so did not noticed before).

Very annoying issue... Did somebody try a factory reset ?

On 5.0.1 WhatsApp works great for me.
But the app Inbox which is from Google, has the problem with notifications.
I think it's the problem of the app and not of the Os.

Low volume : problem with your ears/earpiece...
Feeble vibration : problem with your sensitivity...
Camera Focus : problem with your sight...
App crashing : problem with the app...
Battery : problem with the app and your usage...
Notification : problem with the app...
...... everything and everyone in world is at fault except OnePlus..... .
Oh come on fanboys and OP Advocates.....hats off to you guys.......
    Well, enjoy your delusion.........

    So, what's your problem dude?

Just because I don't have any of these issues, do you get the right to call me delusional?

Maybe some devices do have a problem with hardware. But 99% of problems with battery and other issues it's because of apps or not having a factory reset after big updates.

No don't get me wrong, I'm not only pointing at you but all the handful, yes only handful fanboys and advocates, who have absolutely no problem with your phones(which is practically not possible) and have purchased OnePlus phone not to call or communicate but just for factory resetting every month and after every update.
Good luck, enjoy your infinite free time with your pristine, flawless OnePlus....
(no harsh feelings to you or any user please)

Unfortunately turning off "advanced battery optimisation" does not help with gmail.
It enables some notifications of other apps, but does not "unlock" the gmail synchronization.
It looks like a more basic problem with oreo, possibly not even related directly to Oneplus

yes, gmail it is the latest version.
I tried almost all possible known tricks...

    For example:
cleared gmail data, remove gmail update, reinstall gmail update from play store, reboot the phone, logoff and logon from my google account, cleared the google play services data, updated the google play services to latest version by hand, ...

gmail only updates when I open the app and I force an update by scrolling towards the bottom

The only thing I did not yet try is a factory reset, I really want to save this as the very last desperate option ;)
