No idea buddy, i have never used an MI device till date.

Yes you can, just flash the MI Rom from TWRP and you are good to go. If you wish to come back to your stock rom, you can either restore your nandroid or clean flash the stock rom again from TWRP

I did everything right, but when I root the phone, it goes into an infinite boot (I'd say it's not a bootloop: the phone just never boots completely and the oxygen animation goes on forever)
    Any help?

My phone has been out of order for over two weeks. Any and all help is appreciated. Apologies in advance as well, because i'm a beginner.

How do i know whether it's hard bricked or soft bricked? I tried updating to (i believe) 3.5.6. Before this, everything was Oxygen OS. I didn't have anything else customized on it. It got stuck during the update while rebooting in boot loop. The phone never flashes to the black screen. Just the two dots chasing each other around the larger dot.

I can get into recovery mode.

When i try to Reboot to fastboot, there's just a OP logo and underneath it says "Fastboot Mode." Am i in fastboot mode then?

I've got a USB driver, but i don't think my Mac recognizes that my phone's connected to the USB. How do i know? (Screenshot attached of Fastboot dialogue in terminal. When i type (or attempt to type some of the commands above), shouldn't i expect to be able to see what i'm typing? Because nothing shows up.

I'm so lost! Thank you in advance for your help and patience.

In order to root device does the device have to be unlocked from carrier? I followed the steps, however I get stuck at recovery screen. Device shows device state: Locked also under developer options OEM unlocking is greyed out. Could this be why I am unable to get to fastboot?
