I'm currently eagerly awaiting my OPO, which should be here Monday; but several times while waiting for my invite I very seriously considered a few other phones in its place. One of my top contenders was the Xperia Z1, because a solid camera was one of my top features; so I've been comparing the two every which way I could, and one of the earliest available was this image set: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/102323783541214509544/albums/6008898725084115441
One of the main things that stood out to me in these images, and many HDR image from the OPO I've seen since, is they "halo" effect that is very prominent around the tree in the lower left for example.
Now, what I'm wondering is, is that something that can/will be improved with software, or is it likely to stay?

When you got your one, use jira and plus the threads concerning the camera. It's about hdr, af etc. Cm will provide, I hope.

HDR halos in general are terrible but many people even seem to like it that way. Haven't even tried HDR mode on the OPO yet.

yeah, I'd really like to see the HDR look like the Z1's, I think it looks perfect; great color and exposure basically per pixel, no white halos where there's a large difference, and a little less saturation in the color looks a little more authentic to me.
