This method worked for me! Thanks you so much, I thought I had a total brick, could not even access USB for possible system restore. After the 12 hour wait, I plugged it in and felt life and saw the battery warning screen.
Customer support said ship it back to them...

Holy crap, that's it.
My phone died twice like this overnight. The first time I stumbled across this fix by accident so I didn't know how exactly I did it. Thanks!

yes this helped in my case too. My op3t was not powering up no matter what. After cooling a little while, it powered on

Thanks - this subtle clarification did the trick for my 3T. I put it in the fridge while reading the other posts before resigning myself to a 12+6 hour wait. Then I read this - took it out of the fridge, connected the cable to the device only, plugged in the charger to the power (switched on), held the power button and then plugged the charger end of the cable into the charger.

The device buzzed and then started boot. I then logged in here to say thanks.

Before clicking "post" - it's still on .

This sounds like the perfect fix for my problem except my power button doesn't work anymore. I've been using the 'hold down the volume down button while plugging it in' method if I need to turn it on but now it's not even lighting up when I plug it in

Thanks, and other life saved. My OP 3T is 3 years old, so when it suddenly froze and went blank, not reacting to power or connected charger, I really thought this is the end. Very happy with the solution.
The first basic screen scared me first, (haven't seen such since the commodore 64 era -obviously I'm not a linux user) so for fellow amateurs some extra info to reduce anxiety (you would figure it out anyway):
When you press the above button combination, a black screen comes up with 5 or 6 short lines on the top written in red and green characters.
The first, START is in green (so selected), press the power button (OK) and the miracle happens.

Battery drained out completely. While recharging, I pressed the power button. Accidentally I seem to have pressed the Volume down button also. The Menus appeared. Afterwards, the screen is showing Oneplus logo only.

Or just plug in your charger and leave it for a couple of hours, that often does the job
