it's taking up so much space.
I have tried to clear everything
    I have tried *#888# method
I have tried recovery mode clear cache
I have tried Android/data/file/recycle bin clear method.
after all that I still have 42GB taking up space

The others is for the apps installed, apps data, system's files and folders, Android updates, etc which are necessary. But this is way to much. Go to file explorer and see what's taking up so much space. Check whatsapp folder for one and rest others to, else connect your device to a computer/laptop and arrange the files/folders in your device according to their memory and check.

I checked. there is WhatsApp at top taking up 8GB and others are not even close. Still taking apart major things take up (upper limit) 25GB only. The rest of 25GB idk

Well out of that 25gb 8-10gb is for the system...so you are left with 15gb of unknown data.
I would suggest you backup your data and factory reset your device. It would be clean atleast and then you can recover your data from the backup you made and will also remove apps that you don't use but are installed anyways.

Also you posted this in the wrong section, it should be under OnePlus 6 support section instead of introduce yourself section. Post in the correct section from next time.

There is a reason for that, mostly to prevent repetitive posts.

If you use search there is hardly a need for new threads.
