With the exeption that you will leak your phones IMEI in plaintext to the vpn provider, because of a privacy issue Oneplus hasnt fixed in months.

Its a privacy leak. Also people could be siphoning them to clone phones or get blacklisted phones (for example stolen iphones) working again.

The IMEI could be used to create fake location profiles of people and other fun stuff like that.

As with any privacy leak, you are either on the side of the small guys, or of the company that has to pay to fix it.

The issue made the headlines on XDA twice btw.

Still no word from Oneplus on a fix.

As for using a VPN with this issue in the open, it has considerable risks. Most people wont care, but there are risks attached to it, because of how Oneplus has implemented the update process.
