    Is it a newly acquired device? I would turn sync off, reboot the device and then once back on try to sync again. Dependant on the amount of contacts there maybe a little delay, not too much though I'd imagine. One thing I experienced was that although it was showing as syncing when I looked on the laptop the contacts did sync. Worth checking on there too

    Remove your gmail account, reboot your phone and add gmail account again.
    And make sure you have given all the necessary permission to Google app and the contact app.
