Last week we introduced the OneLab team, and this week we’d love to share an app we’ve been working on inspired by the Community.

A little backstory first. Last summer, we had an online research session with a few Community members looking into a topic we called ‘content creators’, and during it we needed people to get something from their phone to a computer. One person emailed themselves, one used a messaging app to text themselves and another used a cloud service. This was unrelated to the testing but it did catch our attention…

Fast forward a few months, we remembered the scenario with everyone sending themselves information and thought this would be an interesting problem to try and solve. Our amazing developer Tim W made a simple demo app to copy text on a phone and paste it on a laptop and it looked very promising. After a few months of work and testing we’d love to share what we’ve come up with.

If you’ve ever emailed yourself an image, messaged yourself on a chat app just to get something on your phone, or been annoyed with the 25MB limit on email clients then we think you will love this app!

As the idea was inspired by the community, we’re sharing it here first. If you want to be the first to test then please:
    • Try it out and let us know your thoughts
    • If you find bugs then please report them in the app (about page)
    • If you like it then please review it on the play store (it helps us so much)

Clipt - Seamlessly and safely send text, photos, and files between devices

The App and Chrome extension creates a link between your devices to seamlessly connect your clipboard. Once installed you can copy on one device and paste on another or use it to send files back and forth easily, connected to as many devices as you’d like.

The app uses your own Google Drive to transfer the data, and we only transfer a way to identify that data and tell the other devices so it’s safe and secure. In the permissions, you’ll see we request the read and write of your Google storage, but Clipt can only download the files it creates as it’s siloed. In the app or extension we keep the last 10 items available to you, but after that it auto deletes so it won’t fill up your storage.

Give it a try and we’ll be in the forums answering any questions you might have.

Hi Everyone, firstly thanks for the great reception to the app 🤟🏼 From all of us a OneLab a big thanks, we're seeing a huge spike in downloads (you haven't crashed our server yet so keep going 😉) and you've already used it to transfer over 10k pieces of information!

This is the first release and we still have so much to do, so hopefully, you can give us some time to work on upgrades. We're listening to you! I've written a summary of what we'll be looking into below:

    High Priority
    • Make it work on browsers based on Chromium (Brave, Edge etc...)
    • Multiple uploads from Android (Chrome supports right now)
    • Other browsers (Firefox). We need to investigate this as we're not used to working in Javascript but we see the demand from the community.
    • The ability to turn off auto text copy from desktop/laptop. Some users love, some don't - maybe we could split this in the future.
    • See if we should trigger automatic downloads rather than having to go to the app/extension when you send files. (When you have >2 devices setup this might be annoying and we're a little worried about data consumption but we could investigate for laptop/desktop)
There are lots of requests for additional features, our philosophy is to do one thing and do it really really well! We're going to focus on the 'data transfer' problem right now but can always grow the scope in the future. We don' want to try to do too much and then fail!

Other than that we see a few crash reports which we're working on but generally, everything is functioning well. Big love to everyone for the positive support and we'll keep working on Clipt as there seems to be a real demand. ❤️

    Dear Community,

We’ve been overwhelmed by the support shown to us from the OnePlus and wider Android community. 4 days after our launch on Friday we have tens of thousands of users and Clipt has been used to transfer over 250k pieces of text, links, images, or files.

We’re listening to your feedback and we’d like to share that we are working on the most requested features alongside our exciting roadmap.
    • Chromium based browsers (Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, etc)
    • Multiple file sharing from Android (Chrome already works)
    • On/off auto-sync option from browser (Everything is copied from your computer)
    • Quick settings upload option on Android
We’re a small team but dedicated to make Clipt a success with you. Thanks for the ongoing support!

    Team Clipt

There is an awesome team working on this exploratory feature, so a big shoutout to Tim, Crayon, Jay, Sharon, and Yi. Most of the team have never met and we’ve all worked remotely from Taiwan, London, and NYC to build the app. Huge thanks to them and a few of us will be in forums answering questions!

Check it out! Hopefully, it will be helpful. It would be good to hear your feedback as it sounds like you use a lot of these type of tools.

    1st turn off,
Why link it with Google Drive?¿ said:

If that has to be done, one can directly use Google drive itself and avoid Hassel of installing and using additional app and chrome extension 😩
Could it have it's own account and management sort of.
Think over it, if it is possible it would be wonderful to have a standalone or probably OnePlus based service.

Unfortunately, we're just a small exploratory team so we need to use APIs and someone else's cloud service as it would cost to do that all ourselves. 😒 GDrive is just used to transfer the information, with our app you can copy from anywhere on your laptop and then just paste straight away on any other device. Most of the time you'll never need to open it and you don't need to worry about your GDrive filling up with random files as it clears up after itself. But understand your points about standalone, if it gets successful we could go this route 🤟🏼

A network based too will work. But no Google collaboration.

Now that's something useful! Earlier I used to send text, files over what's app on laptop for file sharing! Let's see how this turns out!

I appreciate it The download links are above. All our team had workarounds as well, we didn't even think about it really. On the internal build we've been testing we've already transferred over 17k bits of information... Kinda crazy!

@Sam T. Installed and tried - pretty smooth app. Reduces my transfer process by 4 steps
Will update if I find any bugs in the usage (I love finding bugs lololol)😂

I hope we get a desktop app regarding the same which would act as airdrop for Android.
The current version depends mostly on upload speed and transfer speeds are slow. Would love to have direct ftp over devices on same networks.
