    I've been a developer/lead/manager/principal (currently) for 16 years - I swapped from Eclipse to IntelliJ in 2007. I haven't looked back! IntelliJ has SVN/GIT integration native (although I still use Tower2 for GIT) plus scala (plugins) too. It is also a full blown Javascript IDE (for angularJS etc ). I recommend you take a closer look at IntelliJ. It's fast, as it's system is based on one project per window. Eclipse slows down as you can have 40+ projects in one IDE - so it needs to do file change checks on all. It's ambitious and welcome, but doesn't work well in an agile environment unless you know how to run it well. IntelliJ comes just ready out of the box.

    Can I also recommend, though it's not cheap - but if you work with app servers (which I DO NOT anymore), a company called ZeroTurnAround makes a product called JRebel. It allows runtime changes to classes - so, no restarts! It's a clever JVM Agent that just does this right. You can run it in Debug mode too (so you can step through). So, it allows you to make code changes and save them - repeat operation, then voila, your code changes are applied to the JVM. It's great if you got the cash to splash for it.

    Why did you went for Java-only the past 8 years?! You're capable of becoming a full stack developer...

    Cool :D I'm a programmer too. I began in Android (Java) and have a few apps on the appstore. I've only been programming for 1.5 years though :p

    Just a tip: checking if a boolean is true is redundant, you should also remember to put your semicolons :D

    So instead of
    Code:
    while(typing == true) {
    System.out.println("hi!!")
    }

    use
    Code:
    while(typing) {
    System.out.println("hi!!");
    }

    you can also remove the "{}" since its a one line operation or you can keep it.

    I am a mathematician by training, but do a lot of coding for work. Python is my preferred language, as Java is really lacking in mathematical libraries, but in my opinion Java has some real advantages. It is really fast, extremely easy to learn, and so easy to distribute.

    But I cannot stress enough, in this current environment - become a full stack dev :) I'm also using AngularJS since alpha stage - the focus is client side dev these days. Make sure you understand the DOM model, and more importantly, HTML5/ECMAscript5 and now, the upcoming ECMAscript6. I use AngualrJS to orchestrate my client side services (thanks to dependency injection) - you got controllers, services and the more complex directives. I've made many wrappers for JQuery based utilities in directives. Get these basics right, then you can jump to ES6 or TypeScript (which is quite nice!). But you don't need to learn AngularJS, you can just learn JS now and own it on the client. May I also suggest a healthy integration of WebSockets :)

    Learnt Java from school for O levels (exams we have usually when we're 15/16 years old) and for A Levels (exams usually for when we're 17/18)... That brings me to the present. I haven't found it particularly hard, but I can't comments on other languages since I haven't had the time to try any yet.
