I have seen multiple post about people loosing root access after the OTA.. I have jotted down the below the instructions on how to retain root access after OTA updates.

Follow this steps... 1.Magisk Manager → Uninstall → Restore Images). Do not reboot or you will have Magisk uninstalled.
    2. Now Update the system and let it install completely. Do not press the reboot button.
    3. Now install TWRP A/B Retention Script from Magisk Manger. This module is available on Magisk (if you have twrp as custom recovery) Skip this if you do not have TWRP installed
    4. Go to (Magisk Manager → Install → Install to Inactive Slot) and install Magisk.
5.Once Magisk installation is done, press the reboot button in Magisk Manager.

Your phone may get into bootloop once, if that happens just restart the phone again.

Voila now you have your OnePlus updated and You also have Magisk installed with root access

Or just download and flash the full rom and install magisk, that's it.

You would require TWRP to install magisk..

huh, nope you don't have to flash twrp again.

Download the full update to the internal storage >> Reboot to Twrp >> install the rom and right away install magisk >> wipe cache and reboot. That's it.

If you don't install magisk right after installing the update then you will loose twrp.

Ok, so we install the OTA update, and if necessary reinstall magisk with twrp (and possibly twrp again)..my main concern is in regards to unlocking the bootloader...if I've already done the unlock through Motorola on my Moto x4 and ADB will an OTA update change the bootloader status? And if so, will the same key work again?

Wait, you're asking about a Motorola phone on the OP forum or are you using this as an example?

I got an op5t and thought I could follow those steps. Unfortunatly the system updater asks me to reboot BEFORE the OTA update. But with that i'm afraid to loose root. I'd really like to keep root.

Also is it better to hide system updater from root via magisk or doesnt IT Matter?

    Thanks in advance

Believe it or not twrp is an obsolete project, which 8s why you want to avoid it. Unfortunately devices without a/b partitions are left out in the dark with twrp less root. Twrp has caused so much petty issues, and is only a requisite to obsolete custom rom community.
