There have been rumors that Netflix was planning to enter the gaming segment for some time now. They’ve recently hired Mike Verdu, an Oculus and EA veteran, only further fuelling the speculation. Now, in a letter to shareholders, Netflix has revealed that they’re looking at the gaming segment, and also shared some details.

Netflix is planning to enter the rapidly growing gaming industry. The games will be bundled with their existing plans at no extra cost, and there won’t be any ads as well. Sounds like a great deal, doesn't it?

Here’s what they said in their Q2 letter to shareholders:
But yet again the question is: Why?

Netflix has faced increased competition for user time from games like Fortnite, PUBG, TikTok, etc. This might not make sense at first, but think about it - would someone really pay for Netflix every month if they rarely spend any time on it? Wouldn’t that money be better spent on a Fortnite season pass?

Netflix is seeing growth slow down, and they’re looking at gaming as a way to bolster their growth by expanding in a new direction. Netflix has a large collection of franchises that it can make games on, and in fact, they have already tried interactive technologies on the Netflix website and even worked on full-blown games. Stranger Things: The Game was released for mobile platforms, and a sequel also came to consoles. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was an interactive movie where the viewer could influence the storyline and ending. So, it's clear that Netflix does have some previous experience in developing games.

While it would make a Netflix subscription much more compelling, what we don’t know yet is how Netflix plans to position its games: would it be something like Google Stadia, where the game is merely streamed to your device, or would it be more like a bunch of downloadable apps that need to have a Netflix subscription to play them. Regardless, these games would unlock a lot of value from franchises like Shadow and Bone, House of Cards, Black Mirror, etc., and help Netflix differentiate itself in a rapidly consolidating industry.

I hope they are 100% cloud-based. That you'll be able to play them wherever you have the Netflix app installed.

The games will be included for free with the existing subscriptions. ;)

That would be ideal! But I think they may tap into the gaming community with a whole new "Netflix Gaming" application.

Maybe there are combined options with the classic Netflix subscription. Like 20 bucks for Netflix HD & 1080p cloud gaming.

I am quite sure the plans would be a little different. Won't be offering Gaming on the Basic Mobile Plan 😅

Yeah it was just an example because I can't imagine Netflix being not smart enough to not offer combined subscription plans...

Not really a good idea just from the fact that other cloud gaming services aren't doing very well.
    But anything could happen :D
