Next generation of OPPO's VOOC Flash charging is here, says SAFETY first !

    OPPO has been at the forefront when it comes to battery charging technology, in the form of VOOC, the in-house flash charging. This has been leveraged well by OPPO's cousins such as RealMe and OnePlus in different names and has stood out as of the key features customers love.

    VOOC went on from 18w to 30w to 65w to 120w charging speeds which is phenomenal. But there has always been one concern in the minds of not just tech enthusiasts but the users too - how safe are these flash charging speeds? How do they affect the phones in the long term? How will the increasing heat generation be handled? Now OPPO wants to put these concerns to rest.

    Earlier this week, OPPO in its "What's Next For Flash Charging" event and made some announcements of what they've done to address the safety concerns, with the following:

    1. Fuse with lower impedance - In cases where there is an overload/surge of electric current, the new lower resistance fuse will blow and isolate the battery from this supply

    2. Gallium Nitride (GaN) Switches - For the first time, OPPO will be using GaN Switches in its smartphones, which not only function as a traditional MOSFET but also double up as low impedance and high voltage units for heat dissipation. This also leads to battery life improvements

    3. Internal series bi-cell design - Bi-cell design has been there for a while, but a new approach of combining the dual battery cells in the same structure allows for around a 5% increase in battery capacity for the same battery size. In addition, it also helps reduce heat generation

    4. Battery Safety Generation Chip - An AI-based chip will detect if the battery is damaged, by recognizing real-time voltage drops across various scenarios and alert the users via the OS and propose actions to be taken

    5. Composite Current Collector - The all-new composite current collector consists of a composite material sandwiched between aluminum layers as opposed to aluminum-only in normal batteries. This is further reinforced with a 5-layer protective material that shields it from short-circuiting. Lab tests have shown a 100% success rate when the battery was put through puncture and collision cycles.
    In addition to the above, there are other benefits such as maintaining a battery health of 80% even after 1500 cycles, cherry-picking scenarios to increase charging speeds by as much as 20%, strike a better balance between charging speeds and handling temperatures

    With around 3000 patents and support for over 30 devices, VOOC Flash Charge's important step towards "Safety" focus is a welcome move for a potential user set of 195 Million worldwide, allowing people to charge any device, anytime, anywhere. It's very heartening to see OPPO focusing on safety aspects in addition to the crazy charging speeds. Hopefully, this becomes a norm pan-industry!

    When VOOC flash charging/WarpCharging can be done more safely, that's always good IMO.
    So the power supply will need to be replaced and/or serviced I guess?
    That's great, a built-in battery check running in the background. I like this!
    This technique has proven itself, so this is great!

    Graphene is going to be the next big thing for battery technology.
    Heat dissipation & absorption are the few major challenges.

    Ofcourse. It would spice up OnePlus' offerings even more. I was already amused by the speed of Warp 65. Just imagine how an even faster charging would fare.

    120 W is crazy fast. The thing I would like to know more about is the overall battery life difference between the 65W and 120W. I find 65W to be more than sufficient, but if I am getting 120 without any long time damage to battery, it seems a great change to me...

    Anything that increases battery life and charging speed is definitely welcome. I think we've all come across the battery heating up during it's charge. To be honest, I always have a nagging in the back of my mind that I'm damaging my phone with all this fast charging malarkey. So this news is great.
