Hey, I'm going to build a gaming PC pretty soon. I have about £200 which translates to $300 USD. This is going to be my first actual PC build from scratch as I have upgraded PC parts in the past.
    Here is what I have:
    1 -Zalman t5 case
    2 -1tb hard drive
    3 -CD drive
4 -750w modular xilence power supply
    5 - windows 7
These are from my old custom build PC and I'm pretty sure they can be used in my new build.
    What I need:
    1 - CPU
    2 - motherboard
    3- ram
I can buy the graphic card later and I have about £100 for the graphics and left overs from the CPU money. Also I'm not going to be doing any over clocking but I have a Asus square EVO cooler for LGA 775/am2+ and I'm just wondering if it could be reused with the newer sockets

Can you try putting it into PcPartPicker please? It helps organize things too.

The case is a micro atx case, I'm just wondering I can get a haswell i5 with a really cheap mobo with 4gb ram under £200/$300. Is this worth it?

don't go too cheap on the mobo. i5 is good, but you should try and get its name and run a comparison on https://www.cpubenchmark.net/

Honestly I dont think the cpu upgrade is worth it. the i5 by itself costs about 150-200. AMD does a good job.
