    Dear friends,

As you may have heard, the upcoming OnePlus Nord 2 5G will carry a premium MediaTek chipset.

Last year, we grew the OnePlus family with the addition of the OnePlus Nord line, our most significant step in the mid-range category in years. It reaffirmed our mission of sharing great technology with the world and making our signature Fast and Smooth experience more accessible. In 2021, that mission hasn’t changed. And thanks to constantly improving technology, we’re able to leverage new innovations to continue delivering on that promise.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1200 is a powerful processor. But the “Never Settle” spirit means always striving for better. So, by collaborating with the MediaTek team on top of the Dimensity Open Resource Architecture, we were able to push the limits of this processor and bring you a host of AI-based features which enhances the user experience across a variety of touchpoints. To highlight the new AI-focused enhancements from the chipset, we’ve even given the processor a unique name: the MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI.

Naturally, you – our incredible community – had a ton of questions about our partnership with MediaTek, and the OnePlus Nord 2’s MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI chipset. That’s why we recently hosted a room on Clubhouse answering them. And now we’re proud to present them here on our forum. Below, you can find the answers to your most burning questions:

    1. Why MediaTek on Nord 2 and why now?

At OnePlus, we focus on the experience first and select components based on the performance and experience they allow us to deliver at the price point we are targeting. For the Nord 2, we collaborated closely with MediaTek on enhancing the Dimensity 1200 and its AI-based features, bringing to the Nord 2 improvements across photography, display, gaming and more.

Why now? MediaTek opened its DORA platform to smartphone brands to unlock a differentiated experience. The software team at OnePlus and MediaTek worked together for about 10 months to bring new and enhanced features to MediaTek’s chipset. And now we can finally bring those new and improved features to Nord 2, to deliver an even faster and smoother experience.

    2. How good is the MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI compared to the original Nord’s processor (Snapdragon 765G)? What Snapdragon processor is it compared/equivalent to?

The MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI provides 65% faster CPU performance and 125% GPU performance when compared to the performance of the first Nord. But to ensure the Fast and Smooth experience expected from us, we tweaked the chipset’s AI platform. In terms of overall performance, it’s comparable to Snapdragon 870.

    3. What’s the difference between the MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI and the standard Dimensity 1200? And why focus on AI?

We have worked closely with MediaTek to collaborate on the SoC and enhance its AI-based features, and the addition of the “AI” in the name is an accurate reflection of our work. Nord 2 is the first product with features like AI Resolution Boost and AI Color Boost, which aim to improve the display experience. Nord 2 also comes with AI Pphoto Eenhancement, AI Vvideo Eenhancement and Nightscape Ultra, like other devices powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1200. However, the collaborative work has allowed us to improve the photo processing speed and image stabilization capabilities of Nord 2 above that which is offered by the standard MediaTek Dimensity 1200.

    4. Why focus on AI?

Why AI? Well, the collaborative AI work completed on top of MediaTek’s Dimensity Open Resource Architecture brings a host of new AI-based features to the Nord 2 to enhance the user experience across various touchpoints.

    5. What are the benchmark scores of the MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI?

The Nord 2 was put through the AI benchmarking test run by ETH Zurich. The final AI scores managed by the Nord 2 with MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI SoC was 172.7 on the AI chart.

That’s impressive because the ranking takes into consideration an exhaustive list of devices ranging from high-end flagships to powerful mid-rangers. The OnePlus Nord 2 with its score, breaks into the top 10 with high end flagships.

The AI Benchmarking tool run by ETH Zurich is a comprehensive test that consists of 46 AI and Computer Vision tests performed by neural networks running on your smartphone. It measures over 100 different aspects of AI performance, including the speed, accuracy, initialization time, and more. It assesses the performance and limits of various approaches used to solve different AI tasks such as Object and Face Recognition, Optical character recognition, Semantic segmentation, and photo enhancement simulations to name a few. These are just some of the parameters of this comprehensive test.

Your MediaTek partnership is based on cost savings or tired of exorbitant Qualcomm's Snapdragon SoC pricing @Susie Liu?

Is AI good ? Very good or super great ?

Congratulations with the announcement of the very first, MediaTek powered OnePlus Nord. I'm interested in the following, since @Pete said this about the OnePlus x OPPO integration:
"Since Oppo phones have been powered before by a MediaTek SoC, has this made the choice of using MediaTek in OnePlus phones any easier?"

The Mediatek chipsets had a pretty bad reputation in the past when it came to performance and heat management.
How is the Nord team going to tackle those two obstacles? Especially the overheating and thermal throttling issues.

Can we unlock bootloader? Mediatek devices are very infamous in 3rd party rom development community due to no official unlock resources

What's so cool about it? They usually lack performance and efficiency compared to Qualcomm, and if I recall correctly (I don't know if this has changed) smartphones with a MediaTek rarely/never get any custom ROMs. So this also means that you can only do 3 years with this device, instead of 5 or more (because it likely lacks custom ROMs.)

Such comments as "I'm excited to see something else than Qualcomm" only make sense for the market both Qualcomm and MediaTek are in, but for the user it's not really good to have a MediaTek SoC, unless it means the device will be priced cheaper.

Not sure about it, but the reviews will tell us. All the best for the launch tho. 👍

By the way, who remembers the Snapdragon hype around the first OP Nord? It's almost like hyping up the headphone jack and getting rid of it half a year later ^^
