    EDIT March 16, 2015: [
    The project is 75% done, scroll through pages 6, 7, and 8 for pics!
    ]

    I have been thinking about making a portable wii with a spare one I have. It might be kind of fun to do, but my time is spread thin with college and work. I have never cut a board and do not own a dremmel or reflow station, but I have the basics + some experience. It would be useful for it to just be kind of a plug and play Wii case so I could just get another wii if the first goes and plug it in to a custom case/ gamecube controller that has batteries, but I can open it up and make something out of it that's actually like a handheld.

    EDIT december 28, 2014:
    Materials I will be using, along with approx. cost;
    - older white softmodded Wii -----------------------------------> ~$50
    - li ion battery (rebuilt with cells from dell inspiron 1100)----> ~$150 without reusing old cells
    - tft monitor or my 7 inch tv -------------------------------------> ~$25 or $100
    - 2 gamecube controllers -----------------------------------------> ~$8
    - 12 v 4.5a regulator-----------------------------------------------> ~$25
    - sd card (for soft-mod) -------------------------------------------> ~$15
    - hard drive (for soft-mod) ----------------------------------------> ~$40 (i have a couple laptop drives.)

    EDIT March 16, 2015;
    I will resume work on the project, it is almost done. The case will need some work, possibly a neat job this time.

    A soft-modded wii could be used to slip in to the custom made case containing a battery, screen, and modded gamecube controller

    The main reason for getting a wii would have to be zelda and cheap retro gaming. The portable wii would be able to emulate or run any major nintendo game from the NES to wii with a softmod. I might even be able to get a device to cast to my oneplus one.

    Cool idea. Especially if you have a unit that has not been online for years and has thousands of games downloaded to it. I don't think you would need a reflow system to desolder and solder it back together. There would be a lot of manual labor on the micro level but that would be good for your skills anyway.

    I think the power source would be difficult on this unit, especially with an added monitor. What is the average power consumption of the unit?

    If you do build one, make sure you add a usb charging lead and keep the AC connection for quick charging.

    Either way, you need to try it. Even if you completely destroy a perfectly good toy, you tried and will learn from it. You may even get lucky and make something you enjoy. That happens to me from time to time. Very rewarding when your tinkering comes to life.

    Good luck!

    What size screen would you use and what type? Outdoor displays require more juice. Would it be used in airplanes, busses and trains or outside and in parks under bright sun?

    I personally think you should get better hardware. The CPU and GPU are power drainers.

    A 2.6 GHz arm is good, but there is the need of more than 400 MHz of GPU.
    Another thing is the system.

    You could make a android base, or Linux (better).

    I have looked in to using a playstation 1 screen, but also have a portable 7 inch tv(think one for the back of a headrest).
    I can leave the tv intact as it is small and has it's own battery. Power consumption is 12v. The ac adapter puts out 3.7 amps, not too bad considering. The wii could plug in to the case, and I could try to get a safe way of charging the case batteries while in use. I can get wiis for $15
