For firmware, check that you have the latest stable build of OxygenOS. Then go to Bluetooth, open the settings of your Buds Z, in that list, somewhere near the bottom you'll have an option to auto-update firmware and whether to use mobile data for the update. Turn both on. The Buds will automatically update the next time you use them.
For bass and sound quality, check that the seal of the Buds on your ears is adequate. I would suggest using the larger eartips provided. Rotate the Buds in your ears till you achieve a good seal. The sound quality will improve drastically once you do that

EDIT: The latest firmware of the Buds Z currently is 328.328.232

My firmware is at 328.328.666 from Malaysia. Apparently when I off Bluetooth absolute volume and the earbuds enhancer from the sound settings( though slightly affects quality) the audio 1-2 seconds audio drop is significantly lesser. At the same time still significantly present.
For the fact that other earbuds don't give this issue.
I hope oneplus really takes note of the customers. I had hopes for this buds. But if this persist I will be a customer less.
