I would like to know if there's a way to upgrade to a newer version of the current rom without losing your root. Is there an option that has to be checked off in settings?

No. But, if you install the Superuser app from the playstore, you can open up the app and have the app root for your device (after the update) as long as your bootloader is unlocked (which it is, since you are currently rooted).

Just update> open the app> read the popup> select yes, install the SU binary> select how you want to install it. Both methods of installation should work and should require no user input, while the SU binary is being installed.
