This randomly happened to my Mum's oneplus 3t, it's only a few months old and not been dropped. I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and whether is the only solution is to return the phone.

it's more to see whether it's a common problem

I wouldn't say it's common, but it sure looks like the GPU is shot.

This just happened to me today. :( In my case I did drop it, but it was from about 2 feet onto a carpet. I'm hoping (probably in vain) something came loose in it, but I'll check it at a repair shop... if not, I'll send it in.

Hi, I had this as well but after dropping the phone from above table-heigth to hardwood floor.
To fix it, I pressed the screen hard onto the phone everywhere and I actually heard a very faint clicking sound. Seems like it had dislocated very slightly (it was not visible).
Now it is back to working perfectly again! :)

Happened to me several times. Plug in your phone. Leave for 5 minutes. Restart. If still a problem, squeeze screen, repeat several times. Takes a while to come out of this mode. Take it to a repair shop and they will charge you.
