Yeah but a locked bootloader also limits your options if something does go wrong

I have an unlocked bootloader haven't tried any sort of sideloading method yet, is there a method I can try that would save my data?

I don't think that one was ever meant to be a daily driver, just an intermediary step to get you back to the official build path.

Are you stuck in a boot loop? There are some threads over on XDA of people who are attempting to recover their data with mixed results.

Same here, bootloop yesterday... (unlocked, twrp, magisk, xposed)
But I managed to recover, I used otg, used usb stick with 4.5.15, in twrp I didn't see everything (encrypted) but I can flash zip from usb.
Dirty flash of 4.5.15 over the bootlooped 5.0, now is everything fine, no data loss at all.

Sure it does, but if it's the cause of the problem why create the problem to start with. Go read the XDA threads, I'm not getting into it over here, I'm trying to prevent people from wasting a day of their life just trying to get their phone working, let alone actually upgraded. Too many people flash first and think later.

Okay but I upgraded just fine with an unlocked bootloader. So unless you're going to offer any clear explanation as to why you think it's causing all the problems people are having I'm not going to bother. I like having the option to flash a custom recovery if something goes wrong. And yes I have checked XDA and they seem just as unclear on the matter as anyone here.

Edit: I will agree with you that too many people jump into flashing without thinking first though

Were you on beta? If not, post what you did so the group can trouble shoot. There could be numerous reasons why yours worked and others didn't, without that information it's no help to them.

How to update to oreo guide.
Since so many are having the bootloop issue including me, here you have how I got it working fine.
I tried the update in several ways, from within the rom, using twrp and sideload. All the time I got the bootloop. Appears to be the issue is when the bootloader is unlocked.
    1. Backup your data in your pc.
    2. Lock the bootloader.
    3. Install the update from within the rom either from internal storage or downloading it. It will boot perfectly.
    4. Unlocked the bootloader.
    5. Flash the twrp(I suggest using the latest blu_spark version since the regular version didn't decrypt the internal storage for me)
    6. Finally, flash magisk, use the beta version 14.6 or 15 since the stable 14 will lead you to no booting at all. (if you installed the regular twrp you will have to use the adb sideload option to flash magisk, if you flashed the blu_spark you can put it in the internal storage and flash it regularly with twrp)

    Enjoy oreo :)

at first I cleared cache and then wiped data in recovery.
after that I selected install using adb and sideloaded oxygenos 5.0. once it completed the phone restarted normally.

that's what I did, hopefully it works for you.

Hi folks. I am in the same situation. Last night I was offered the Oreo update and it briged the phone. I tried to sideload the older OS nd/or TWRP. But both updates fail. Here are my adb lines:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot>adb sideload e:\twrp-3.2.1-x_blu_spark_v8.61-op5_op5t.img
    Total xfer: 0.00x

    E:\>adb sideload e:\OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_019_all_1710311604_e278653ff79644a5.zip
    loading: 'e:\OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_019_all_1710311604_e278653ff79644a5.zip'
    * cannot read 'e:\OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_019_all_1710311604_e278653ff79644a5.zip' *
What am I doing wrong? Maybe someone can post a decent description that can be followed by a dummy like me.

PS: All I did in the past is unlock the boot loader. The rest is stock.

Once you have tried everything and it didn't work then your data is as good as gone. I had to do factory reset on the Oreo to get my phone to boot up. Side load the Oreo won't work as it would exit out without success. The only way to do it is to delete everything then reboot.

Yes I decided to erase my phone because I do not think I can get the data back because the encryption key was gone along with the upgrade. I had mine set up with password encryption and it would usually asked for it but didn't after the update and everything we're scrambled.

Does anyone have the new (fixed) Oreo Link for download?
When I flash the OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_019_all_1710311604 ROM (from the OP website) onto my phone I have an issue with WiFi so that I can only download the Oreo Update via 3G :-(

Can you recommend the best way to backup the data to the PC for un unrooted, locked OnePlus 5? Which tool do you use?
