I'd be curious to see if this issue has been fixed in 5.1.9.

Hardware failure in moderns smartphones is on the order of 2%.
Since Oneplus sold about 2 million units, it means that there will be about 40,000 defective units in the wild.
I am sorry that you lost a 50:1 bet. Just replace the phone. Jesus!

This is a software problem. Please compare results yourself with a flagship such as pixel, iPhone, Galaxy, etc. and see for yourself. Do pay attention to EXIF data and exposure info.

ok those who are facing issue please update ur firmware to 5.1.9 when available, nabbed@ dont update ur phone to 5.1.9 as it will impact your camera, you wont get dlsr level picture(which you are getting right now as you described) rather you will get oneplus 6 level picture.

I finally got a chance to do a detailed analysis of the camera issue on OxygenOS 5.1.9. Unfortunately results are NOT looking good. OnePlus has NOT fixed the issue that many of us are experiencing. Below are examples. I have updated the main thread with additional info.

    Example 6:
Updating to OxygenOS 5.1.9 did NOT solve any of the issues being reported. In example picture below, you can clearly see that picture captured on OP6 is very noisy and grainy. Letters on the keyboard tend to have high contrast and lack smooth edges. In addition there is poor focus on top portion of keyboard. Metadata shows that OP6 used the following settings: ISO-250, f/1.7, 1/50sec exposure while iPhone6s used ISO-64, f/2.2, and 1/30sec exposure. The poor quality image of OP6 is clearly due to high ISO and a larger aperture (lower f-stop). A large aperture also leads to poor focus away from the center (bokeh effect), and grainy image because of more light being captured which results in higher noise due to high ISO being used.

Example 7: After updating to OxygenOS 5.1.9 I noticed the live preview display has some sort of visual artifact similar to jittering or screen tearing. I noticed the live display of camera has some sort of instantaneous image processing being done on the subject being captured. One clear example of this is picture below which shows the live camera preview on the OnePlus 6. Notice the top corner of the green tea box which has a "brown" patch. This brown patch randomly occurred in the live preview and it is an artifact of some image processing being done on the live preview. I even captured a video of it which you watch by clicking on link below. I noticed this issue on OOS 5.1.9 but haven't tested it on 5.1.8. However could it be in the 5.1.9 update, OnePlus tried to "hide" the issue I reported in example 5 where live preview shows a clear in focus image but the actual captured image is out of focus?

Thank you for the update! I'm really dreading the update now, because it seems like such a coin toss. I just also read a thread of someone giving a raving review on the camera improvements brought by the 5.1.9 update.

I don't get why OP is being so finicky with getting this/these issues fixed. They've added and are "refining" second rated post-production gimmicks (Bokeh), that can be had with a third-party software, as a built-in feature of their camera instead of focusing (no pun intended) on having their camera and software consistently produce sharp, detailed, true-to-life images. I really don't feel like OP is listening to this side of the OnePlus community .

I do hope they come around though...fingers crossed:(

One problem is all mainstream media is giving amazing camera reviews to one plus. Probably because they get paid by one plus..
For this reason one plus doesn't care as the problems are not affecting sales .

Wow, still, with the update your photos are not doing any better it seems. I don't know if it's a placebo effect but I think mine have improved marginally. I only notice because the oil painting doesn't seem to be as extreme as before but when I go out shooting landscapes on Sunday we'll see what 5.1.9 shows.

I stumbled upon the the brown patch by coincidence while testing out OOS 5.1.9. I am unsure if it existed on OOS 5.1.8 (may it could have). However, the main point I am trying to convey is that there is is post-processing occurring to the live preview display of the camera in addition to the post-processing after capturing the shot. Thus when using the Camera app in OnePlus 6, I am not really sure what is the correct, the live preview display or the actual capture shot. In my opinion both are telling us the true story of the subject being photographed.

From my update posts and my personal perspective updating to OOS 5.1.9 won't hurt. The issue is not becoming worse, but the original Camera issue is still existent.

@bigsport @R1530620330308 Yes maybe there may be slight improvement in the Camera for dynamic pictures. But from my test of a "simple" picture of a keyboard I noticed the issue is still there.
