What I've read there is no setting for it, it is automatically active.

From what I have seen on my 7 pro, it only lights up when receiving a text message via the message(s) app.

UPDATE: so it turns out when I receive a text it does indeed edge light but only the once when receiving a WhatsApp I also get an edge light but only when I pick up the phone then and only then is when I would know iv actually received a message. surly OnePlus must realise we need a constant blinking edge light to realize that we have a message it's called notification for that reason to notify.

It works perfectly. You need to have ambient display on and wake up to new notifications turned on as well. Moreover, certain apps have in app setting not allowing wake-lock. For example, I have completely muted Whatsapp group notifications. So that I can see them only when I want them. So, in such situation the screen doesn't light up. Else-wise, it works perfectly for all apps.

Try using the above mentioned settings under ambient display.

    Thanks,
    A

It's not very clear from the wording that that setting is tied to the edge lighting feature, after all the ambient display could still activate the screen when receiving new notifications on previous models without that feature.

Also any chance we could get some settings to customize the color/frequency of the lighting effect? I know you've probably been getting bugged about that quite a bit lately but I wanted to throw my hat in the ring too. ;):p

I'm glad a staff member is involved. I'm seeing this question come up a lot. I had not witnessed it, nor did I know it existed. More info about this feature would be helpful. What apps is it compatible with? What settings do we need to look for? Everything seems to address notifications in general, but that's it.

I'm not sure if in my OP7Pro it does not work or....what I get it's how it works.
When I receive a Whatsapp message while the phone is idle I get the notification, the screen lights up (still locked) and also the blue light is shown on the edge (useless, since I see the notification on the screen itself), but then after a couple of seconds the screen is back to...black, no notification, no edge light...just nothing!
Is there some sort of "persistent" notification like the old style led notification that remains when a message has been received or a call has been missed??

Update : I found my problem, animations must be on for the edge lighting to work, and the animation length actually determines how long the light pulses.

To make the edge lighting works.
Setting>System>Accessibilities> unclick Remove Animation. This should work
