facing the same issue from the beginning. It seems like a software issue which is not working in the background properly. Hope they will fix it in soon.

OK, as we aren't getting anything from OnePlus I decided to investigate the proximity sensor thing myself. I downloaded a sensor checker (sensors multitool from play store if anyone wants to see for themselves).

I held the 7T next to my 6T, both using the app, and there is definitely something amiss. The sensor is less accurate, responsive and also gets stuck in the "on" or 0cm position a lot. The 6T uses an "ams AG" sensor and the 7T uses a "OnePlus" branded one according to the app.

I think the sensor getting stuck in the on position is causing the device to think it's in your pocket and therefore doesn't wake the phone. The hitting it with light method might reset the sensor (?) as it has worked for me on a couple occasions but ultimately the sensor goes back to not working - usually overnight.

OnePlus need to acknowledge this quickly and fix it. Unless it's a hardware issue in which case I would want a replacement or refund.

**Edit. Did a bit more testing and the sensor works a lot better in the app when the phone is in landscape mode! weird!

With do many people having this issue I'm surprised OnePlus has not responded? I'm debating if it should just get a refund

I have actually figured out a way to make the Ambient Display working again.

Initially i was also facing this issue on OnePlus 7T that the Ambient Display would stop working randomly and then all of a sudden it would start working again.

    HERE'S THE FIX:

    CULPRIT: Proximity Sensor.

LOCATION: Just below the Front Camera. If you Flash a bright LED light you would see 2 small sensors on the screen itself.

HOW TO: Whenever your Ambient Display stops working-

    1. Just turn off the display by pressing the power button once.

    2. Now take a bright LED light, preferably use another smartphone's LED Flashlight.

    3. Just bring the light close to the proximity sensor (1-2mm away) and hold it for 4-5 seconds, then turn on the display by pressing the power button then turn it off. Repeat this 2-3 times.

You will notice that the double tap to wake and raise to wake feature starts working again.

Well mine did 3 out of 3 times.

It's basically the issue of the proximity sensor that need recalibration.

I hope someone from the OnePlus team is reading this and does the needful to fix this issue once and for all.

Till then keep trying my LED flashlight method to reactivate the Ambient Display.

IIdeally the phone's Proximity Sensor requires recalibration, which can be done on any phone by dialling " *#808# " , but OnePlus has for some reason disabled *#808# command.

So u need to expose the proximity sensor to very bright light so that it automatically readjusts itself.

After application of the Tempered Glass you need to recalibrate the proximity sensor as well by exposing it to very bright light.

Also keep the screen clean around the proximity sensor area , free from smudges and all so as to let the proximity sensor receive apple light at all times.

First time OnePlus customers here, bought two phones, one for me, one for the wife, got them yesterday, did the 10.0.4 update to both, mine has not had any issues, hers does have this issue. Just using the standard protector the phone. The hold it to the light trick has seemed to work temporarily, but yes seems like something they need to address. Otherwise been super happy so far.

I think its not about the sensors because when i clear the cache regularly then this problem doesn't occur. As it occurs i clear the cache and its good to go even in dark.
