OnePlus 7t Pro McLaren Edition issue with fingerprint sensor and T-Mobile Glass Screen Protector via OnePlus Community App

  1. imprezu , via OnePlus Community App , Dec 7, 2019 :
I purchased the phone and the screen protector from the T-Mobile store and no matter what I try the fingerprint sensor will not unlock the phone even if I program multiple fingers using the same finger to unlock. I have to use face unlock or a passcode. The screen protector was expensive so I hope it's just an issue that can be fixed with an update.

Yes, I have same issues with my device. I bought my screen-protector from Wish so I though this was the case. Normally I always buy Nillkin protectors since they are the best in my opinion. But reading this post makes me believe that seems to be a general issue with the device + screen-protector. The film installed on the phone sucks donkey balls and will not save your screen if you accidentally drop it. A proper one is needed.

What is the brand of the screen protector that you purchased from the T-Mobile retail store?

Lies!??! Did you purchase your phone from a T-Mobile store? My understanding is that the OPT 7T Pro McLaren do not have a preinstalled screen protector.

A 7T Pro McLaren does have a screen protector from the factory. I have this replaced for a ClearPlex protector. I have seen that the factory protector has been removed.

Well, mine didn't come one and I think most others didn't either. I don't know where you got your phone but I would say that whoever sold it to you opened it and put on the film.

No, the box was sealed. There was a screen protector on the factory. You could also clearly recognize these at the edges. I was also there that this was taken off. The screen protector is also mentioned in the specifications.

That's the international version of the McLaren edition. That's not the same one T-Mobile sells

Mine keeps talking me the screen is dirty and needs to be cleaned. I never had the problem with my OnePlus 7 Pro. It's completely unusable for me right now

I purchased a privacy screen protector from here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SKDP6FV/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_apa_i_n1g8Db3CVS0JP

Even thou it fit perfect, I have the same problem where it's not detecting my finger print. From what I can tell, the protective film has a notched area where the finger should be placed but it's finger print area seems to be higher on the screen. Could it be that the McLaren edition could have it's sensor higher on the screen than the non McLaren edition? Is this why the fingerprint reader isn't detecting when we add the protective films?

Hey guys. I have OP7T Pro McLaren Edition (India) and mine came with a screen protector pre-applied. Its NOT a tempered glass, but a plastic film. This protector is not intended for impact protection but basic scratch protection out of the box. The reason behind having this this film pre-applied is that generally people take time in purchasing their choice of tempered glass after purchasing the phone. Sometimes the tempered glass for newly released phones are not readily available. Till then, this film serves some level of protection from micro aberrations and scratches.

If you are planning on applying a tempered glass, please make sure you peel off this film before applying else the fingerprint scanner will not work as intended. The pre-applied protector sits so plush with the screen that it almost goes unnoticed and I've seen people trying to put a tempered glass over it. Eventually they end up having a malfunctioning fingerprint scanner.

    Some key points to note:

    1. If you are planning on tempered glass for OP7, OP7T, OP7 Pro, OP7T Pro, you have to choose a glass which has full-glass adhesive. Corner adhesive based glass wont work as it results in an air-gap between the glass and the screen resulting in fingerprint scanner failures
    2. There are UV Curing based Glass that comes with a UV glue. Though this sits pretty well on the phone and does not affect the fingerprint scanner in any way, there are some installation measures that you have to take. Please make sure you completely cover the top speaker grill, the volume rocker, the lock button, the profile slider button, the lower USB C port and lower speaker grill with scotch tape/duct tape. Sometimes covering stickers are provided in in the box but most of the times its not. The installation requires you to pour the glue in the center of the screen and slowly drop the glass over it. It almost always overflows and I've seen numerous cases where the glue gets inside the speaker grills, usb port or the buttons causing malfunctions.
    3. Always remove your fingerprint profile and re-configure your prints after installing a tempered glass. The refractions/micro distortions caused by the glass messes with optical fingerprint scanner in recognizing your already configured prints. Reconfiguring ensures that you don't have false rejections.

I'm getting the run around with both OnePlus and T-Mobile saying it's the screen protector. Except I'm using the same exact brand I used on my 7 Pro which had the same exact screen this McLaren has. Never had a problem with my 7.pro

So I am having the same issue. Fingerprint reader has greater than a 90% failure rate. Long story short, changed the lockscreen wallpaper to something that has a bright/light colored background and unlocking from the lockscreen (not the ambient screen) now has a > 90% success rate.

I'm on the fence about whether or not the glass screen protector I got from the T-Mobile store is to blame. Before I changed the wallpaper I could sometimes get the reader to work by holding the phone at a different angle. My theory then was that light was refracting through the glass screen protector and interfering with the reader.

Still can't decide whether or not to take off the screen protector and see if that improves the performance of the reader with dark backgrounds.
