Not possible as OOS is caf not aosp and since Google updates don't go with caf I can't see how it could be done..

It is required for OEMs to support Project Treble for all devices that ship with Oreo. They will most likely not pass CTS otherwise.

We'll see in a few weeks my guess is the 6 will be caf and that's why Oneplus are distancing themselves from it...

LOS is caf and supports project treble for the 5T. Although, they have lots of connection with Qualcomm with their intrusive code all over it, probably got tons of help in making it more compatible, not taking any credit away from the wonderful group though. It should be coming regardless.

Hmm.... I don't see how that works unless Google are firing caf updates as well as native ones or am I missing something?

OEMs have to merge it after making necessary changes, and I'm sure that's helped by CAF for CAF based ROMs. If they don't, they will likely not be certified by Google to use Google apps and services.
