Yes, Oneplus3/3T and Oneplus5/5T will get android 8.1 BUT: without project Treble.

    https://source.android.com/devices/architecture/treble

So if you care about future updates without manufacturer dependency, skip this phone and wait for a real Android 8.x Oreo release. Phones that are delivered with Oreo as from the initial release are obliged to have project Treble. Owners of a 3/3T and 5/5T will not benefit from project Treble. As said by Adam Krisko from Oneplus.

    Be warned!

They talk a big talk but let's see how it works in practice, and don't fret we will be getting updates for at least 2 years (so they said in the AMA they did). And yes they said in the AMA they will not have treble on OP 5T

They say they do not plan to, perhaps if we make a big enough fuss about it they might at least for the 5/5T

OnePlus confirmed in its forums yesterday that none of its current devices, including the 3/3T and the 5/5T, will support Project Treble, even after they're updated to Android Oreo. Project Treble is an Android Oreo feature that attempts to address slow Android update schedules by allowing manufacturers to push out Google's most recent OS without having to wait on their chip partner, like Qualcomm, to support it.

Who cares? Probably google phones will support it but still who cares?
Tons of you guys would whine about updates every 2-3 days that drain your battery or data...

Well that was expected as they will need to revamp the kernel and that won't happen as for now as Oreo was the last major update promised.

But I guess it's totally Ok. In either case it was going to be useless for OP3/3t atleast.

What's interesting is that OP5/5t are going to miss it too but thats also justified as the last update is going to be Android P and I believe OnePlus will deliver it timely.

Meanwhile OP3/3t users can have fun testing all kinds of custom ROMs and keep on experimenting.

By 2019, 3yrs old OP3/3t won't be much fun with crazy tech advancements going on.
OnePlus 6(/6t ) or OnePlus 7 is what would be worth looking upon.

its something done with google's interventions, ans google selected a handfull of future new devices to launch with it (that's why it says "devices launching with oreo")

I just mentioned it because you said it was for phones that launched with 8.0, which essential didn't.
