    Hi.

I am facing this weird issue since a few days after the Android Pie update on the 3T.

The device's screen doesn't wake up even after pressing the power button or double tapping the screen(gesture is ON). When I double tap the screen, I can feel the vibration of the device being woken up but no display. With the power button, I can hear the screen wake-up and sleep sounds but, again, no display.

This happens only when the device is charging or hasn't been used for long(e.g. when I wake up in the morning).

It takes a few double taps on the screen or a few double presses of the power button to actually wake up the display.

With the double presses of the power button, first I get a quick display off thingy(like how the picture tube of the TV would do if turned off suddenly) and then it wakes up.

I figured this behaviour might be because of the deep sleep mode so I disabled both in battery optimisation but the issue still persists.

Even with incoming calls, the display remains off while the phone continues to ring/vibrate. I, then, have to manually wake it up by tapping the power button.

I have run out of options here and I am not sure if Android Pie is the culprit here.

Can anyone from OP or this forum help me figure this out please?

UPDATE : I recently found that the screen would randomly switch off when the device is in use while charging. Only while charging.

    Please help guys.

Have you tried wiping the cache from recovery?

    When did you update?

Leave the device charging over night, it helps settle the OS effectively.

Until 9.0.6 is live, about 3 weeks to go, try the aforementioned.

Pie has adaptive brightness, instead of auto brightness, which will adapt overtime as per your preference. And while doing so, it'll consume a bit more than what simple auto brightness used to.

Just hang on there a bit longer, it'll settle.

I have done a factory reset and it hasn't helped a bit.

    The display issue still persists.

I am thinking downgrading to Oreo and see if the issue remains so that the culprit can be isolated. If the issue remains then it's a hardware issue. If not then, it's definitely Pie.

The new "adaptive brightness" learns from your preference. If it's not bright enough, or too bright, adjust it manually and Android will "learn" that's how you like the screen in that level of light. Next time, it will adjust automatically the way you like it.

It's definitely NOT "Pie" or everybody would have it.

It's almost certainly something that went wrong during your upgrade. Factory reset just removes your apps and preferences, it might fix things you've screwed up with stuff you've added but it definitely doesn't fix anything that's broken with the installation.

For the effort involved in you going back to Oreo you should at least try a full wipe and a clean install of 9.0.5. A full wipe using TWRP and then flash the official download. If you've never done anything like this before then it's time to learn. I guarantee it will be easier than the downgrade.

I agree that not everyone is having this issue but I'm definitely not alone. A few people replied to my thread with the same issue and I also found a few threads regarding this issue as well later.

I'll try the twrp flash as suggested by you.

Make sure your device doesn't go on power saving mode at 50%.

Android 9 made power saving percentage customizable, in the battery section.

    Do cross check!
