    Mr. BG , Nov 3, 2017 :
Dear fellow community members (be it from India or elsewhere).

The challenge Itself may be over, but please feel free to post your best portraits that define India (so no selfies, no "random clicks" or just petty portrait mode pics please, put in some serious effort, you'll be held to a high standard as you can see below) that define the people of India in this thread :)

Here are the winners of the challenge:

The standards are very high, as you can see!

    1. The Honorable poor man by @azzzulikz966
    DC61788D-8DAE-4299-A902-1DB887250C09.jpeg
There can be only one winner.

It has everything a good portrait needs, great focus and sharpness, good lighting and a background that adds to the subject.

A great photo, and the eyes of the old man tell the story of a hard life and kindness.

    Congratulations!

    2. The youth of India.
    E81F45CF-EDFD-48D4-9C4B-FA85E71029E5.jpeg
Lovely photo. It's sharp, the eyes are twinkling with fun, what is he up to?

Look at the future of India!

    3. The lovely lady.
    20C8723C-EFCD-420C-8726-A8A730BC41FB.jpeg
    Who is she dreaming of?

Or are we dreaming her? An Indian rose in a beautiful setting.

Slightly over exposed, but the composition is fantastic!

    Honorable mentions:

Not within the rules, too late, but great pics nonetheless..

    Just a day at work:
    F282AAE3-D249-491E-B878-4D03CCBD0CCA.jpeg
Nicely framed, with the patina on the signs, fake bokeh isn't working so well here.

    Balloons
    6320A50C-EC96-4D3A-B09D-E0C60A6BABEE.jpeg
Not a real portrait, but a very nice photo and original post processing.

    Street kid selfie.

Selfie, so out of competition, but this photo speaks to me..

I've never been to India myself yet, it's on my bucket list.

I'm an enthusiast photographer and one of my favourite subjects is Urban/Street photography.

I love portraits of Indian people, don't ask me why, it's just that there is something special about the people from India,

(please explain if you have an idea as to why that is, lol)

    Back to the challenge.

Aim to make it really great!

    The rules.
    • Advise: ask your model for permission.
    • Maximum of two entries per person.
    • No low quality pics (so don't use the crap forum app)
    • Not just a simple snapshot of your brother/sister etc. (They can be models of course)
    • NO SELFIES!
    • No stupid watermarking!
    • Don't be lazy by posting something you already made a while ago and think it's "good enough". (It probably isn't)
    • Go out and make the effort! (Or be beaten by those who will make an effort)
    some advise
    No snapshots means being serious!

So you have to think of lighting, the right background without clutter and the right frame, a photo must tell a story. Here are some great tips for portrait photography to start with.

I've added some pics below from Karl Grobl, a professional Photographer I really like. Aim to be this good, I will keep you folks to a high standard, I know you can do it :)

You can use any camera you like, from your Oneplus to a top notch DSLR or even a fourty year old box camera or whatever. It's about the eye of the photographer, not about Megapixel or fake bokeh.

Tell us something about the people and the conditions, that's far more interesting.

    The prize: eternal fame

I will choose a top 3 of the best pictures come December ;)

    How to upload photos?

Please do not use the forum app The low res and compression is just too much, use the valuable advise given here by @strafer

Some great examples from Karl Grobl:

These are good, using natural light, I'm convinced there are people that can challenge these.

It's OK to comment and give advise on photos, that's how we learn. Please be respectful towards each other, so please, no cheers for mediocrity.

    Thx.

    I guess it shows ;)

My aim is to get people who want to develop their skills to reach beyond snapshot level

Give them a little challenge if you will, to really think about what makes a great photo.

    Hey @Mr. BG
Thanks for making a thread on portraits !
I hope people would search to get to this thread ....
for now i have only one portrait which is worth uploading (im more into landscapes, astro and macro, request you to check those out from the link in my signature, though)

    here it is

    sweta5163-20171103-0001.jpg
    Clicked on Oneplus 3
    Edited on lightroom mobile version

And I have taken the permission of the lady already, to post it in Photography pages/areas...

We were in the lecture hall and i wanted to click a portrait badly (was inspired by Brandon Woelfel, and still am !)... So i asked her for permission and i clicked the portrait...

That's one fine looking lady, female doctor? Here's modern India for you ;)

But if you don't mind me asking, what's with the blue huey? Check the blue splash on her shoulder, did something to wrong in Lightroom? Also, the background is a bit of a mess.

So I added a slightly cropped B&W version. Just for fun...

We're still students, but no harm in calling us Doctors:D:p
Actually I was Super inspired by Brandon Woelfel and his style of portrait photography .... So i added the blue hue and decreased the temperature(quite a lot)
Thanks for removing the unnecessary elements from the background ! I ignored them somehow.....

And your version of the picture looks awesome !
    Thanks again !
