Today, I’d like to take you on a brief tour of computing history from ancient Babylon through the end of the second millennium. Pictured are three ancient personal computing devices that, believe it or not, still work to this very day.

    IMG_20211124_090924.jpg

In the bottom-front of the photo, we have the venerable abacas. It is thought that the abacas originated in ancient Babylon between 300 and 500 BC. It traveled from the Middle East to China and Japan. This particular abacas is, no doubt, not that old. However, it most likely spans at least two generations. It was in my father’s possession up until he passed on six years ago when it made its way into my hands. Oh, and don’t ask me how it works. I’m totally clueless about its operation, proving that I’m also not an ancient one.

On the left in the photo, we have the forerunner to the modern day laptop. This is the Zenith Z-171 PC which was purchased by me in 1986. Based on the design of the Morrow Pivot, the Z-171 ran on a 8088 compatible CPU running at 4.77Mhz. It had a backlit 25-line LCD display, two 5.25” floppy drives, a parallel and a serial COM port. Weighing-in at over 14 lbs., no one in their right mind would consider this a laptop. In fact, these types of computers were often called lunchbox PCs. Just yesterday I charged the battery up to see if this thing still worked. Lo and behold, the clock-calendar and Mercator displayed! However, I could not check if the computer would boot for I lacked a bootable 5.25” floppy disk containing MS-DOS. This computer was largely responsible for getting me through school.

Over on the right, we have Apple Computer’s iMac DV Special Edition Graphite. Released in 1999 and just nine months after the original fruity iMacs were released, the special edition iMac included an optical drive (CD-ROM) , a Firewire port for those who did video editing in the Mini DV format (me), and an Airport slot for wireless connectivity. This particular iMac still works today and runs Mac OS 9 (before Apple switched to Intel silicon.) Why do I still have it, you ask? It’s been a long time project of mine to convert this beautiful computer into a fish tank. One day I will finally complete this project.

BPl crt tv was revolutionary when it launched with HQ video quality brilliant colours with great colour accuracy along with the subwoofer system which delivers powerful sound which is unmatched till date. I grew up watching it and can't really throw it away beacuse of the emotional attachment I have with it.I still use it beacuse of the tremendous sound it delivers and I don't even remember when was the last time it gave any trouble though there were issues with the dth but never with the tv and is still running like a pro without any issues whatsoever! I love it. Hope the modern TV's come up with such amazing sound built in.this is oldest gadget I have with me which is still working like a champ. Thank you @Zozo S. and OnePlus for this amazing contest able to see lot of OG stuff already.

All photos are shot on the same smartphone, same camera app and have been edited with the same software:
Shot on: OnePlus Nord 2 5G
    Shot date: November 24, 2021
Camera app: Stock (selected the 50MP lens)
Editing app: Adobe Lightroom Classic (Version 9.4), used a Vintage presets pack.
Resized from 50MP photos to <3MB during PNG export within Lightroom.

    'Discman':
This portable radio/CD player is from 2001, the coolest feature of this Discman is the '40sec electronic anti-shock protection'. No matter how much you jumped with this thing in your jacket or trouser pocket, the song kept playing...up to 40 seconds, of course.
    IMG20211124151537.png
Used the following Vintage preset: Dusty Light Red.

    Furby:
If there was a gadget in the 90's that was incredibly popular among (Dutch) children, it was Furby. This electronic pet knew all too well to put you to work and take care of him/her down to the last detail. One thing is for sure, you could almost say that Furby had batteries as a diet, the batteries ran out in no time.
    IMG20211124145916.png
Used the following Vintage preset: 60s Vintage Label Tint.

    Yahtzee:
This digital Yahtzee handheld by MB (Milton Bradley), better known as Hasbro, is from 1998. I tested it today and everything still works fine, how nice is that? But if I had to choose, I would still go for the Yahtzee game with pen and paper, the dice and the cup!
    IMG20211124145215.png
Used the following Vintage preset: 60s Vintage Label Exposure -0,5.

So many cool photos shared so far, but I have to quote this one.

Oh man, that's an explosion of nostalgia from the Summers of my childhood. Bart vs. the World was such a defining game for me. Thank you for sharing them.

Also, don't know how that NES is intact after playing Castlevania. :p
