Why do you care so much about ads? They just pop up once when you start the vpn, after which you can just close the vpn app and use it for free. You know maintaining those servers cost them a lot of bucks. The app developer needs to have a source of revenue to do so. The totally free vpn apps just have another way of of earning bucks, they sell your private browsing data to shady websites. So you decide now you want ads or your data sent to your beloved Chinese websites.

Flash VPN, simple and clean but does come with ads. If you're rooted shouldn't be a problem though.

there's no difference between the update package you get from using vpn or not, it just tricks the update manager to use IP address from a country that's eligible to receive the update.

    Please don't.
OnePlus is lean without the app baggage that comes with other phone brands and their OS.

There is no such thing as "free". Someone has to pay for the VPN servers, their maintenance and the network bandwidth. Either you pay for the service, you pay with ads being shown or you pay with providing your data (Your data parsed at the VPN server endpoint and on sold). So you have plenty of options and plenty providers.

I pay $40 per year for a good VPN service and use OpenVPN. I downloaded the Oreo update from Germany last night and installed it inside 5min. It worked well and no problems.

But how does the package determine region of the device when applying the region specific changes such as SMS categorization for India and etc.

i believe it depends on what sim card/network provider you're using and the OS will manage which features will be available or not depending on the network provider's location. point is, there's literally no region difference between oxygenos update packages, except if you're talking about chinese specific oneplus phones released with hydrogenos.

or you can pay for a VPN service because to maintain, operate and bandwidth costs money. I pay for mine and get top speeds and no ads. Even comes with an ad blocker. if you are going to shell out this much for a phone, you can afford a quality VPN service.
