The way technology moves forward never ceases to amaze us. It was just three years ago that capacitive fingerprint sensors dominated the whole mobile phone market. But today, they are already on the verge of leaving the stage.

With the rapid technological development, Fingerprint-on-Display, FOD for short, comes into sight. FOD is an amazing unlocking solution that represents an upheaval in the phone industry. Equipped with OLED technology, the fingerprint sensor lies under the screen, thus rendering full screen devices possible. So practical that it quickly became a hit in the market.

For the flagship OnePlus 7 Series, FOD is undoubtedly an essential feature. But in order to guarantee its performance, it requires the finger to touch the screen within a certain area for a certain time. This makes it necessary for us to work on the design aspects of FOD, making it attractive enough to demonstrate speed and technology, which is an issue by itself, beyond technological adaptability.

We were delving into this task day and night and finally draw inspiration from a glance at the sky. When one looks up at the night sky, one would surely be fascinated by the magic of the vast unknown universe which connects the past with the future in infinite space and time. What else could possibly make a better prototype for our FOD design than the vast galaxy? Just imagine that on the screen: an icon resembling a universe with dotted stars orbiting. How cool would that be!

With the prototype determined, we managed to think outside the box of traditional fingerprint patterns, starting to brainstorm around the FOD icon design. Based on the idea of galaxy and star orbits, we sketched several rudimental versions of the icon, developed more derivative models, and put them all on the computer.

All these icons basically met our expectations in terms of product integrity and differentiation, but we also needed to consider the Bold & Clean style that OnePlus values, so we conducted multiple comparisons and finally narrowed down to the following three plans:

    FOD04.png FOD05.png FOD06.png

On the one hand, we wanted the icon to be composed of smooth lines, which would create a sense of technology and space for our users. On the other, the graphic couldn’t be too complicated to be successfully recognized. In other words, the icon must be both symbolic and easy-to-read. Although Plan A is plain and simple, it wasn't closely related to the fingerprint. Plan B satisfied the requirement of symbolism but failed to be consistently recognized in the background of different wallpapers.

In the end we decided to go with Plan C not only because it represents the trajectory of an orbiting planet which is reminiscent of power, but also performs well when it comes to readability in the background of different wallpapers. In the dynamic design, we use the element of particles to convey the symbolic meaning of stars. When the finger touches the icon, countless optical particles flow and gather on your fingertips, decoding your personal biometric information.

What will the future of mobile phones look like? What breakthrough will be made in unlocking methods? To be frank, your guess is as good as ours. But we do know that OnePlus is always ready to unlock the future with you by our side!

This is a short story about OnePlus FOD design. If you want to learn more, just tell us. We are passionate to be your storytellers!

The lack of IP certification explained with a bucket.

The FOD explained with the universe.

I'm honestly scared to read your explanation of the pop-up camera and how it erects itself.

"why don't you add custom fonts support feature?"
don't you guys think that is also a basic thing which have big impact in serving the big role in UI as that is one of the things which constantly in contact with everything you see or use in UI???
having desirable fonts according to user's wish or comfort make UI definitely look good.
    please enable that feature.
if you really looking for smallest details then how could you forget this basic but one of the important thing?

OMG! Your first comment itself may have destroyed their own hype and must have rendered the time that the readers dedicated to read the entire big thing useless. Next biggest troll is here. Bring that crown!
