My Oneplus Nord generates a dng (raw) file and a jpg file in the Pro shooting mode of the default 1+ Camera app for each shot. But I feel that the dng file does not contain either a jpeg preview or a thumbnail. The exiftool does not show or extract either of this on linux. Can anyone confirm whether the dng files on Nord contain the thumbnails or preview files?

It's not related to a preview or a thumbnail, it's only related to the weakness of the Operating System and its tools.
In Windows 10 (21H1) ou Windows 11 (21H2) there is no problem to identify DMG files (as RAW) with Photos which is the default viewer because the dedicated decoder extension is immediatly downloaded from the Microsoft Store to display miniatures in the Windows Files Explorer.
For those who don't like the default viewer, a freeware such as XnView Classic (the best viewer since 1991) convert the DMG to 8 bits per component the first time and allows all future miniatures.
For a commercial app such as PaintShopPro there is "Raw Lab" included which read directly 16 bits by channel and displays all DMG miniatures in the File Explorer when choosen as the default viewer.
The same applies to Photoshop 2021 which has its own module "Camera Raw" which acts the same way when choosen as the default viewer.
Raw cannot be read on a computer without the proper tools.

If I remember correctly also open source photo editor Gimp supports raw images, but it's a little bit harder to use than PS and PSP mentioned above.

Yes on Gimp (Linux) it depends only on RAW converters but it's a long story ....

Sorry, i didn't fully understood what you mean by this but Gimp is available also to Windows.

However, there's no sense to store any images in raw-mode if one doesn't manipulate them afterwards in any way

Sorry but for DigitalAMP I am only talking about Gimp for Linux (of which I am a specialist) which is the reference for all Linux users since 1995 with the Gnome project. Unfortunately Windows versions cannot compete due to the unoptimized multitasking environment.
Anyway I fully understand that real time processing of DMG/Raw images is very important to get rid of ugly compressed jpeg files before finalizing a project as all digital imaging professional do.

I don't need to view the dng files using a viewer app on either windows or Linux. I need the embedded preview jpeg for enabling the 'auto-matched-tone-curve' feature of my raw processor app rawtherapee. Its not able to find the embedded jpeg within the dng files produced by OnePlus Nord. The exiftool on Linux is also not extracting it using the -b option. Hence I want to know if it's being generated by the camera app or not.
